The best HomeKit-compatible smart light bulbs

Cupertino, February 28, 2020

After dressing your home with smart lighting, it's hard to go back. "Hey Siri, turn off the living room lights" is a daily feature in my house. You can make the lights turn on automatically when you return home or at a time when you are away. You can usually control the brightness and sometimes the color. After you get used to the smart lights, the old switches and variators feel positively old.

However, there are many types of intelligent lights. Different networks, applications and ecosystems used to control them. Some smart lighting solutions are only compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant, which will work with the appropriate iPhone applications, but will not be as integrated as you want. To make smart lighting seamlessly integrate into your Home or Siri application, you really want HomeKit compatible lights. This makes them easier to control with iPhone or Mac, but also allows you to integrate them into Automations that control multiple devices simultaneously depending on the time, location or actions of other devices.

To use automation or control your lights outside the home network, you'll want to make sure you have an Apple TV, HomePod or iPad connected to your home network to act as a Home Hub.

Our TechHive sister site looks at a lot of smart bulbs, but if you're in the Apple ecosystem, you may not be too interested in those that only support Alexa or Google Assistant; you probably want one that works with HomeKit (in addition to its own features). These are the smart bulbs that are the most appreciated, compatible with HomeKit.

The best smart LED light bulb

LIFX is a very strong competitor in the intelligent lighting space and occupies a very close place in second place. LIFX no longer has just the A19 and BR30 form factors to offer and we really like the unique LIFX + (which has a series of infrared LEDs that will help your home security camera look in the dark). Phillips' new Hue bulbs with Bluetooth and Zigbee support may be the main choice for some users, but to use HomeKit you'll need to add a Hue bridge. With LIFX bulbs, no additional hardware is required.

The best smart light bulb with white LED

If you want a smart white light bulb that does not require a smart home hub, the LIFX Mini White is a great choice. Although slightly smaller than the full-size LIFX bulb, it produces an equivalent of 60 watts of 800 lumens - as are many competitors.
