This week's top stories: iOS 14 rumors, Apple's record Q1 earnings, wireless charging mat, more

Cupertino, February 4, 2020

In this week's top stories: Ming-Chi Kuo details what to expect from Apple in 2020, AAPL reports record earnings, the new emoji will come later this year, rumors of iOS 14 and more. Read on for all the biggest news this week.

A new Ming-Chi Kuo report on Wednesday detailed what to expect from Apple in the first half of 2020. Kuo reiterates that we should expect the iPhone SE 2, the new iPad Pros and MacBooks with switch keys with scissors. However, in particular, Kuo says he expects a smaller wireless charging mat from Apple, ultra-wide-band trackers and high-quality Bluetooth headphones.

Kuo's report leaves much to the imagination. It is not based on the specifications of the new "smaller loading mats" nor does it offer a point of reference as to what it means smaller. Read the full report here.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 at WWDC in June. Prior to this release, a new rumor this week suggested that this year's release of iOS will support all the same devices as iOS 13 last year, including the iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 6s. However, it seems that iPadOS 14 will abandon support for iPad mini 4, initially introduced in September 2015 and iPad Air 2, introduced in October 2014.

This week also marked Apple's earnings week, the company reporting its fiscal first quarter 2020 numbers, which cover the holiday shopping season. Apple announced revenue of $ 91.8 billion and a profit of $ 22.2 billion. This is an all-time record for both net income and revenue, and compares with $ 84.3 billion and $ 20 billion in the same quarter last year.

Here's how the revenue was divided into categories:

  • $ 55.96 billion: iPhone
  • $ 12.72 billion: services
  • $ 7.16 billion: Mac
  • $ 10.01 Billion: Wearables, Home and Accessories
  • $ 5.98 billion: iPad

Apple released iOS 13.3.1, iPadOS 13.3.1, tvOS 13.3.1, macOS Catalina 10.15.3 and watchOS 6.1.2 on Tuesday. Updates include bug fixes and performance improvements targeting Screen Time, iPhone 11, and the Mail app.

Last but not least, this week, Apple officially confirmed that it has completed the launch of the redesigned and rebuilt Apple Maps service in the United States. Next on Apple's list is Europe and says the redesign will start appearing later this year.
