TP-Link cancels plan to add Apple HomeKit support to its smart plugs

Cupertino, August 13, 2019

TP-Link is no longer planning to update its Kasa smart plug with support for Apple's HomeKit system, although it has announced plans to support the smart home feature as early as January. We do not know what has changed, but Apple Insider This morning, a note was posted on the TP-Link website stating that its Smart Mini Plug would no longer be available.

HomeKit support is canceled "due to changes to our roadmap," writes TP-Link. The note does not indicate whether HomeKit's assistance is intended for other products, but TP-Link remains "engaged in the development of innovative smart home solutions", despite the cancellation. . We contacted TP-Link for more information.

This is a surprising change, especially since Apple has greatly facilitated the support of HomeKit by the devices. Two years ago, the company began allowing devices to support the smart home system using only software, without requiring the hardware chip that was needed before. After removing the hardware requirements, a number of existing devices were quickly updated. New updates have been promised since then, the Kasa Smart Plug Mini is included.

The TP-Link smart plug is one of the best options for smart plugs. You can get a pair for less than $ 40 and the TP-Link application allows you to remotely enable and disable them, identify which outlet corresponds to which outlet, and set schedules for performing tasks. . That said, if you are on an iOS device, there is no reason to buy a smart home device that does not support HomeKit, because the Apple system greatly facilitates the control and synchronization of devices throughout the world. House. I would always recommend the Smart Mini Plug if you use Android, but for iPhone owners, selling is harder.
