tvOS17 causing Matter/Thread instability for Apple Home devices?

Cupertino, October 7, 2023

I have two 4K ATVs, both wired running tvOS17. I've had about a dozen Eve thread/Matter devices on the network for months with tvOS 16. Although the Home app would occasionally show "no response" for Matter devices, it was rare and resolved quickly on its own for the most part. I also have Home Assistant as a second Matter controller and every Matter device is also paired with HA. Not sure if it's related to tvOS 17, but over the past 2-3 weeks both Apple Home and Home Assistant have had a multitude of Matter/Thread issues. Since Home assistant has detailed logs, I can see some mDNS timeouts for important devices and some subscribe/resubscribe issues. Sometimes a Home Assistant restart or ATV restart cures those mDNS timeouts. In the Apple Home app, I see "no response" for some accessories. What's interesting is that most of the time it doesn't seem to be a device problem. That is, in Home Assistant I can control an accessory that shows as "not responding" in Apple Home. It looks like tvOS has some subscription or other issues that Home Assistant doesn't have during a "no response" period. And on other occasions, Home Assistant shows that a device is not responding, but Apple Home can control it just fine. If I pull the battery on an "unresponsive" device like an Eve motion sensor, then it will come back online in whatever controller it was having trouble with. I only have the two ATV wire edge routers. And I only have Eve and Smartwings Matter devices. IGMP snooping is disabled on my switches and all devices are on the same internal LAN. Anyone else seeing new instability since updating to tvOS 17?
