U1 chip and compatible hardware?

Cupertino, September 15, 2020

It's been a year since Apple introduced the ultra-wideband U1 chip to the iPhone 11, but we haven't seen much hardware or even software developed for it. I understand that some uses require a massive investment for a company to install and therefore should have compatible U1 devices (currently only iPhone 11) in the hands of consumers. This may even be true for smaller-scale uses, such as the door lock of the house. I was surprised that the iPhone SE did not have this chip, but today I found out that the Apple Watch Series 6 has. I would assume that the future iPhone 12 will be as well. To my surprise, this is not the chip needed to use CarKey, as it is listed to work with the iPhone XR / XS and Apple Watch Series 5, which makes me wonder exactly how it works.

TLDR: Once the U1 chip is put in several devices, what uses do we see? Do you have news about what certain companies are developing?

I can't wait to go to the front door, with nothing but the Apple Watch, and the door unlocks without having to touch anything.
