Unexpected iPhone UX issue with HomePods in home, speaker

Cupertino, January 18, 2024

An elderly relative moved into my family home for several months to recover from an injury. They are a reasonably competent user of their iPhone and iPad. I've added them to Apple Home and they work well with the lights via the app or Siri. The only problem they have is on their iPhone with every call they put it on speaker mode because it helps them hear the call with some hearing loss. Whereas in my house, the multitude of HomePods and smart TVs look like options where the "speaker" button has been replaced with "audio" and then the selection dialog. This has led to all kinds of confusion, sometimes funny, sometimes not, where she's constantly transferring calls to random HomePods and other Airplay devices around the house. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to restore the "audio" button to a "speaker" button? The only workaround I've found so far is to turn off Wi-Fi during a call, but that will be just as, if not more, difficult to constantly remember to do.
