VOCOlinc BT 5.0 contact sensor, battery life when used with an iPad HomeHub with BT 4.2? How do you know when the battery is off?

I just received a VOCOlinc contact sensor, it uses BT 5.0, but my hub is an iPad Air 2 with BT 4.2

VOCOlinc says that the battery life would normally be 6 months. Would using a BT 4.2 home hub significantly reduce this? What behavior do these things have when the battery is near death? Do you regularly ping the Home hub with status updates so that the hub knows how to publish “unanswered” as status after a reasonable period of time, such as a few hours or a day?
