I put this more here for all other VO users searching for the information. If you are fortunate that you do not have to worry about how accessible a company has made their app, feel free to skip this one.
Currently, the iDevices app is the only one that allows firmware updates. I kept losing the connection to my wall socket, so in desperation I tried the app to see if there were any firmware updates. I didn't expect to have any luck. Surprisingly, I was able to find the room, then the unit and then the settings and run the update. It remains to be seen whether this solves the connection problem, but at least the update was fully available.
I have tried other apps and have never had a firmware update work. Not even Eva, who is otherwise more or less available. Koogeek, iHome, LIFX, Sylvania and others are all completely useless, or mostly, if you can't see. Refreshingly, iDevices have done a good job. I now know which company I will focus on in the future when I get new or new smart devices.
