Wemo Smart Plug updates failing in Home app

Cupertino, July 27, 2023

I have a Wemo Smart Plug WSP100, which is a thread HomeKit only device. As such the firmware can only be updated through the Home app. I have it set to automatically update and it did it once a month or two ago to 2.0.1.

Today I saw that it was “installing” a 2.1 update that was released June 29th. I let it sit all day in “installing” before I finally unplugged it. That didn’t stop it from showing “installing” though. It was both “not responding” and “installing”. Finally I removed it from Home and factory reset it.

The update popped up again, but did not automatically install. I kicked it off manually, but about a minute later after “installing” it simply changed back to “software update available”. Trying to update again resulted in an error that “the accessory is busy”. This persists unplugging and only goes away on a factory reset. That simply lets me try the update again, which silently fails and then becomes “busy” again.

I’ve tried unplugging all home hubs and waiting for home to complain and then plug them back in and then add the Wemo back in and update, but that fails as well.

The Wemo plug works fine, even remotely and the thread network is working, but it refuses to update via Home.

Is there any way to actually get the Wemo plug to update? Are there any logs I can look at to see what’s wrong?
