I'm not sure how to handle the staged release of the Thread for Stage update (I have two and only one received the update), but I can report that it's definitely in flight. The internship that was updated to support Thread in my house went from about 60% success in invoking scenes (and even then after a few seconds delay) to 100% success, about 0.5 seconds late. So ... yes! Obviously, it's too early to tell what improvements in battery life we'll see (if any), but the early signs are good. This product is finally up to the bill for me.
