LG is rolling out support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on select 2018 smart TVs

Cupertino, December 28, 2020

It was a bit mountainous for the owners of LG 2018 smart TVs when it comes to AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support. But, a few months after the initial cancellation of plans to add new features for older smart TVs, the update is now released.

That's according to a report today from MacRumors, based on comments made by readers of the publication. At the time of publication, there is no detailed list of smart TVs in the 2018 LG list that receive the update. However, in April, LG confirmed that smart TVs called "SK" and "UK" will receive the update before the end of 2020. So it is possible that these will be the TVs receiving the update now.

This was a wild ride, at least for those who waited for this support. As mentioned above, LG said that the update to support both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit will arrive for some smart TVs from 2018 at some point in the future. However, by September, LG had changed its mind, saying it could not "guarantee" a solid user experience with older smart TV applications. As a result, it has essentially given up on plans to provide support.

But it seems that those plans have changed again. TV owners made asks LG to change its mind, so it looks like this has had an impact on the company's decision makers.

With AirPlay 2 supported on these selected smart TVs, owners will be able to stream content from iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and / or Mac without the need for an Apple TV as an intermediary. With HomeKit support, people will be able to control TV controls, such as volume, power and more with the Home app and voice commands via Siri.

So, good news for the selected LG 2018 smart TV owners who have been waiting for these features! Tell us if you see support on your TV in the comments below.
