Smart lighting company WiZ has launched Matter support for its smart bulbs, lamps and sockets, making them compatible with Apple Home for the first time (via Homekit.Blog).

wiz smart bulbs
The new app, WiZ v2, supports accessories that were manufactured in early 2021 or later and allows users to migrate products to the new smart home standard, after which they can be added to any compatible Matter platform, including Apple Home.

Existing WiZ product owners should ensure they have the latest version of the WiZ app from the App Store and that their product firmware is up to date. In the app, go to Settings -> Integrations -> Matter, then follow the steps to get new Matter codes for individual devices.

WiZ products that are updated to support Matter will also work with Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings over a Wi-Fi network, rather than relying on a cloud connection as was the case previously.

Until now, the only way to get WiZ lights to work with HomeKit devices was by using Siri shortcuts or unofficially using a workaround like HomeBridge. WiZ is owned by Signify, which also owns Philips Hue, but the latter, more expensive brand, had its Matter compatibility update delayed.

Matter is a standard for the Internet of Things that is designed to improve the interoperability of smart devices across brands, so that ‌HomeKit‌ devices can work with other smart devices from Google, Amazon and others. Matter works over Wi-Fi and Thread, with Wi-Fi enabling smart home devices to communicate with the cloud and Thread providing an energy-efficient and reliable mesh network in the home.

Update: Homekit.Blog says that so far the update appears to be for North American users only, but I've yet to see confirmation if that's the case.

TP-Link's Kasa Smart brand today announced the launch of its first Matter-certified smart connector, the KP125M. The KP125M can connect to HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings settings thanks to Matter connectivity.

tp link kasa smart plug
Matter-compatible devices that are added to a ‌HomeKit‌ setup work just like HomeKit-enabled devices, as long as there is a Matter ‌HomeKit‌ hub, which includes HomePod, HomePod mini, iPad, and Apple TV. If other people in the house use another device compatible with a smart home platform from Amazon, Google or Samsung, the Kasa Smart Plug can be used with that platform, provided a suitable Matter hub is available.

The Kasa Smart KP125M offers scheduling and timer capabilities, plus it can be used to monitor power consumption over time to keep energy costs in mind.

According to TP-Link, the KP125M has a compact and fireproof design that is meant to prevent it from blocking additional outlets. It's designed to work via Bluetooth and, with ‌HomeKit‌ settings, can be used with the Home app and Siri voice commands.

The KP125M Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim is priced at $40 for a two-pack and can be purchased on Amazon.com.

Apple has made the option to upgrade to the new Home architecture available again with the release of iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4 and macOS Ventura 13.3, after temporarily withdrawing the update in December.

feature available for home upgrade
After updating Apple devices to the latest software, users can once again opt to upgrade any Homes set up in the Home app to the new Home architecture, which Apple says brings faster and more reliable performance, especially for smart homes with lots of smart accessories. installed.

To upgrade, open the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, tap or click the ellipsis button (three circled dots), then select Home settings. Select Software updatetap or click Find out more under "Home update available" then follow the instructions. Users who have previously upgraded will not see this option and do not need to do anything as their Home architecture is already updated.

Before the release of iOS 16 last year, Apple promised a new architecture for the Home app and delivered it shortly after the release of iOS 16.2. But the option was temporarily pulled after users reported issues such as HomeKit devices stuck in an "updating" or "setting up" state, devices disappearing completely, invitations to share Home with other users failing, HomeKit Secure video recording not working and More.

Smart accessories maker Aqara today launched its first video doorbell, the HomeKit-compatible G4 with facial recognition.

aqara g4 launch
The Video Doorbell G4 has a 1080p camera and is compatible with ‌HomeKit Secure Video‌, along with support for local streaming to Amazon Alexa and Google Home smart devices.

It features on-device AI facial recognition that can trigger personalized automations for different people. For example, a "welcome home" scene is activated when the G4 recognizes a family member coming home. Or if it detects the postman, the doorbell will play a pre-recorded message.

The battery-powered video doorbell supports both wireless and wired installation and can use a six-pack of AA batteries that last about four months, according to Aqara. Alternatively, users can opt to connect the G4 doorbell to an AC/DC transformer for 24/7 recording and use the battery as a backup power source.

The doorbell also offers adjustable sensitivity, configurable motion detection, and a power-saving mode for users who live in a high-traffic area to extend battery life. In addition, the G4 repeater, which has a 95dB speaker, includes a USB-C port, allowing users to place the repeater indoors.

Video recordings can be stored locally or remotely via iCloud or the Aqara platform. The latter offers subscription-free cloud storage of up to seven days of critical event clips such as motion detection, facial recognition, doorbell and tamper alerts.

Priced at $119.99, the Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 comes in both Shadow Gray and Black, with optional local storage via a microSD card slot. Support for the new Matter standard will come via a future over-the-air update, according to Aqara. The G4 is available on Amazon in both North America and Europe, as well as at select Aqara retailers worldwide.

Apple is designing a new display that will be used for smart home management purposes, it reports Bloomberg. The device will be a sort of low-end iPad that can be used to control HomeKit devices, stream video, make FaceTime calls, and more.

iPad iOS 16 WP Display Feature eric edit
It's designed to be mounted to walls or other objects using magnetic fasteners, so it'll be more integrated into your home than an ‌iPad‌. Such a product would compete with devices such as Meta Portal or Amazon's Echo Show.

Past rumors from Bloomberg they described this device as something similar to the HomePod and Apple TV, intended for home use rather than on-the-go use. Apple is also considering larger smart home display options, and a product that combines an ‌Apple TV‌ set-top box, a smart speaker, and a ‌FaceTime‌ camera is in development, but the project has suffered setbacks.

Right now, Apple is targeting a 2024 launch for an iPad-like smart home display.

The reintroduced HomePod offers a temperature and humidity sensor, but Apple is also enabling the feature on the existing HomePod mini.

HomePod 2023
The ‌HomePod‌'s built-in temperature and humidity sensor can measure indoor environments, allowing users to create automations that close blinds or automatically turn on a fan or heater when a certain temperature is reached in a room, for example. This information is exposed in the Home app like any other smart home accessory.

As pointed out in the comparison section of the HomePod web page, the ‌HomePod mini‌ now offers this functionality. It appears that rather than being a new version of the ‌HomePod mini‌, this is a retroactively enabled feature, the temperature and humidity sensor already present in all ‌HomePod mini‌ models since launch.

In 2021, BloombergMark Gurman said that the ‌HomePod mini‌ includes a dormant temperature and humidity sensor — a finding also confirmed by iFixit. It looks like the feature is now finally enabled, probably via a future software update.

Apple notes that the ‌HomePod‌'s temperature and humidity sensor is optimized for indoor, home settings with ambient temperatures between 15°C and 30°C and relative humidity around 30 to 70%.

The accuracy of the sensor may decrease in some situations where sound is played for a long time at high volume levels, possibly due to heat generation from the device itself. It also seems that the ‌HomePod‌ takes some time to calibrate the sensors immediately after powering on before the results are displayed.

Update: ‌HomePod‌ software version 16.3 enables the temperature and humidity sensor in ‌HomePod mini‌, according to Apple's release notes.

Matter is a connectivity standard that allows smart home accessories to work together seamlessly across multiple platforms, including Apple's HomeKit, Amazon's Alexa, Google's Home, and others. Apple added support for Matter on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16, and tvOS 16.1 last year, requiring a HomePod or Apple TV to control Matter accessories in the Home app or with Siri.

Apple today published a support document designed to help those experiencing problems with HomeKit, outlining what to do if you can't access a home or accept an invitation in the Home app.

homekit showdown 2 thumb
Apple says that on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.2 or iPadOS 16.2, users should use the Remove at Home option on any listed homes that don't have accessories. If the guest user has a home with accessories, Apple support should be contacted for help instead.

If there is a home with no accessories listed, after it is removed from the Home app, the guest user's and home owner's devices must be restarted, as must all Apple TV and HomePod devices in the home.

From there, the home owner will need to remove any pending invitations to the guest user, then re-invite the user to share home control. An invited user must accept an invitation to access a home within three hours or the invitation will expire.

Apple's instructions come just a day after the new Home architecture that was introduced in iOS 16.2 was pulled. Currently, Apple does not allow users to upgrade the architecture, probably due to several bugs that users have reported with the update.

Architecture update issues include HomeKit devices stuck in an "update" or "configuration" state, missing devices, HomeKit Secure Video not working, and invitations to share Home with other users failing, which is addressed in the support document.

In a separate support document, Apple says the new Home architecture will be reintroduced at a later date and has been temporarily removed.

iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, and macOS Ventura 13.1 beta introduce a new Home app architecture update that can be installed to improve performance. The architecture overhaul follows the addition of the Matter Smart Home standard in iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1.

Level Lock+ is an Apple exclusive product as it is designed to work with Apple's Home Keys feature. With Home Keys, users can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock to unlock their homes, the device serving as an alternative to a key.

Smart locks that are integrated into HomeKit have been around for a while, but Level Lock+ appears in the Wallet app and has Home Key features, such as the ability to use power reserve to unlock a door even when the ‌iPhone‌ battery is dead.

The Level Lock+ is equipped with a powerful NFC antenna and the company says it is BHMA AAA certified, which is the industry's highest standard for safety and durability. Like the original Level Lock, the Level Lock+ has a sleek design that looks more like a standard door lock than a smart lock. Installation requires a screwdriver, and Level claims it takes less than 15 minutes to install.

With the Level app, there are options for sharing access with guests and automatically locking and unlocking as a keyed ‌iPhone‌ approaches. There are also tools for configuring key cards that can enable Level Lock+, enabling the lock through the Level app, and an optional $79 Level Keypad that allows input via a key code.

The Level Lock+ is available in satin nickel and matte black and can be purchased from Apple for $329.

Recently, BuzzFeed reported about an ADT employee accessing cameras in customers' homes. I want a video system in which that is technical impossible. With HKSV we have this system. I have now also Many cameras use HomeKit Secure Video for everyone. It's time Apple added a HomeKit Secure Video option with 10 cameras to the Apple One Premier bundle.

HomeKit Weekly is a series that focuses on smart home accessories, tips and tricks about automation, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework.

In the past few years, I've made several purchases related to HomeKit cameras. I have four Eufy outdoor cameras, two Eufy indoor cameras, an Aqara indoor camera, and a Logitech Circle View. These cameras have worked well for me and I can only recommend them.

All of my cameras support HomeKit Secure Video, they have all been very reliable, and I have a use case for all of them. Because HomeKit cameras can be used not only for video but also to trigger HomeKit automations, I put cameras in more places around the house than I originally planned. Since I can use HomeKit to control exactly when Stream & Record, only Stream or only act as a sensor, each of my cameras has expanded its advantages in my HomeKit environments.

However, I have a new problem with my HomeKit video environment. I have more cameras that support HomeKit Secure Video than Apple supports in iCloud. If you have a 200GB iCloud plan, you can store footage from a single camera. If you have the 2TB plan I have, you can record from up to five cameras. When Apple first announced HKSV, these limitations seemed doable because HomeKit cameras were still far apart. Fast forward a few years later, HomeKit cameras are a lot of more widely available, and they've come down in price so much you could easily have more than five.

Ten cameras in Apple One Premier

Logitech HomeKit doorbell verification

Apple should fix this either by paying an additional monthly fee to switch to 10 cameras or by including this as an added benefit of Apple One Premier. There is currently no way to record with more than five cameras. Hence, you either need to use only a few streams or find alternative recording solutions. My current workaround is to record locally on the Eufy base station for the outdoor Eufy cameras, where all of my indoor cameras and my Logitech Circle View HomeKit Secure Video are using. This setup gives me five cameras in HKSV and four cameras recording on an SD card in the Eufy base station.

Summary of the expansion of HomeKit Secure Video

It's a good thing that HomeKit has been expanded to include enough products that the environments become large enough to maximize what Apple currently offers. Just as 2TB of storage can't last forever, a five camera limit can't last forever. An easy way to solve this problem is to have an upgrade option and give users one more reason to switch to Apple One Premier so that Apple can keep growing its service revenue.

One of the first smart home products I bought for my home was a Belkin Wemo switch. Before Apple developed HomeKit, I had already imagined a smart home. Previously there was only one option for an outdoor HomeKit adapter. Late last year, Belkin released a new outdoor Wemo outlet that is compatible with HomeKit.

HomeKit Weekly is a series that focuses on smart home accessories, tips and tricks about automation, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework.

There are several reasons to use HomeKit switches for outdoors. Especially at Christmas, automating your outdoor Christmas lights is a simple reason to add this type of product to your HomeKit environment. But it's still a useful device for anything you might want to control on the outside of your home outside of the holiday season.

I have a pretty interesting outdoor lighting setup that an outdoor HomeKit outlet is the perfect product for. Because of the place where the client installed our floodlights, most of our yard is pitch black at night. It was frustrating for my kids to play at night, but it became more difficult for me to take the dog out. I wanted to add a floodlight that was HomeKit enabled and wire it up without using an electrician. I knew I wouldn't fish it with a light switch, so I had to get more creative with my lighting setup, and an outdoor HomeKit switch is a perfect product for the situation at hand.

I would have preferred to use a native HomeKit floodlight, but our trim is white so it had to match, and most models I found didn't. My solution was to buy a generic floodlight in the right color and plug it into an outdoor HomeKit plug. I installed the floodlights near my gutter, routed the outdoor electrical cable behind the gutter and under my porch. I got the wire through the deck near the wall, put an outside plug on it, and plugged it into the Wemo outside socket.

The socket (marked as "light" in the Home app) is connected to a HomeKit automation system that is switched on for 15 minutes at night when the back door is opened. I can also use my HomePod to say, "Hey Siri, turn on / off the backyard lights."

Install the HomeKit outdoor switch

Installing the switch reveals one of the reasons I love HomeKit. I plugged it in outdoors, opened the Home app, and scanned the HomeKit code. Since this is an outdoor product, I made a backup image of the code to be stored in iCloud. Alternatively, you can use an app like HomePass to keep your HomeKit codes.

belkin wemo outdoor switch homekit

Once the socket is in HomeKit, you can control the plug using the manual controls in the Home app or configure it to turn on based on automation or sensor data from other types of sensors. One disadvantage of the Belkin Wemo Outdoor Outlet compared to the Meross Outdoor Outlet is that you cannot control the individual outlets. There is only a single switch to turn on both sockets. Even within the Wemo app, both sockets are covered by a single switch.

Summary of the Wemo Outdoor Outlet and the use cases

Depending on your HomeKit needs, you will either have a unique use case for a HomeKit outdoor switch or not. Not everyone has outdoor items that they would like to control via a smart outdoor socket where almost everyone works indoors. If you need to control outdoor lighting or want to turn off power to an outdoor TV when you're not using it, you'll love the ability to automate everything with HomeKit with the Wemo Outdoor Outlet.

Matthias Hochgatterer developed the best HomeKit app for power users before Apple ever delivered its own home app. The latest version of the third-party HomeKit management app called Home + 5 offers a redesign and new ways to customize and organize complex smart home configurations.

Home + for iPhone and iPad has a brand new look familiar to HomeKit users from the built-in Home app. Here is Hochgatterer's design approach in version 5.0:

In Home + 5, the usability and appearance of the app is very similar to Apple's Home app. Why? Because most of the people are already using the Home app. You should feel right at home when you switch to Home +.

One thing I really like about the Home app is the interface for controlling accessories. You can seamlessly turn on devices, dim lights and close blinds. Apple did a great job designing these user interfaces. I'm really happy that Home + now has the same controls.

The app continues to outperform the built-in home app in terms of customization with device icons and features with advanced automations.

Brand new in Home + 5 are new ways to organize and maintain all of the customizations that power users invest in HomeKit:

  • Automation Folders - You can group automations into folders for a better overview. If you're an advanced user of HomeKit and have a lot of automations, you know the automation screen gets confusing really quickly.
  • Backups - You can save your home configuration in a backup. A backup contains information on accessories, groups, rooms, zones, scenes and automations. A backup is useful as HomeKit can be buggy. When you need to reset your HomeKit configuration, you know how painful it is to manually restore accessories, rooms, and automations. A backup can help you with this.
  • Smart Groups - Home + 5 automatically groups similar accessories into a Smart Group and displays them at the top of the screen. With Smart Groups you can dim all lights in a specific room, close all blinds in a zone, or turn off all lights in your house.
  • Favorites - You can finally see all of your favorite accessories, scenes, cameras and sensors on one screen. This makes a great dashboard.
  • And more - This update includes a lot more improvements like the new and faster watchOS app, icons for rooms, and settings sharing.

Home + for iPhone and iPad is available as a single purchase from the App Store for $ 14.99. No subscriptions or in-app purchases. Version 5.0 is a free update for all previous Home + customers.

Recently I made a roundup of the best HomeKit outdoor cameras. I personally have been using the Eufy camera system for over a year as I love the image quality and the ease of installation. What if you want to take full advantage of the Eufy camera system without having to worry about power supply? Eufy now has a solution for you with a new Eufy Solar Panel option to continuously charge your Eufy cameras.

HomeKit Weekly is a series that focuses on smart home accessories, tips and tricks on automation, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework.

I have four Eufy outdoor cameras, the wired doorbell and two Eufy indoor cameras, so I am “all in” with Eufy as a camera manufacturer. I was very impressed with the ease of use, compatibility with HomeKit, and overall value.

At the back of my house I have two cameras, one of which can reach the camera to take it off for charging. The other one needs a ladder because I installed it so high. That's why I decided to switch to solar charging. This particular camera receives direct sunlight, so I knew it would be an excellent solar powered option. Eufy recommends facing the solar panel to the south if you are in the northern hemisphere.

Install the weatherproof cable adapter

The first part of the process was to turn off the existing camera. If you have activated the anti-theft device on the camera, you should deactivate it before unscrewing the camera.

Next, find the adapter set that will fit your camera. Eufy includes adapters for all compatible cameras. The solar panel is compatible with EufyCam, EufyCam E, EufyCam 2, EufyCam 2 Pro, EufyCam 2C or EufyCam 2C Pro. The first step is to connect the waterproof adapter to the micro USB cable of the solar panel and then connect it to the camera. Then take the adapter that covers the plugin and screw it in. The camera is then screwed back into the original bracket.

Assembly of the solar module

The Eufy solar panel bracket screws into your home, but it includes a very long cable so you don't have to place it right near the camera bracket. If you want to place it right on your roof, you'll have enough cable play to bring it back into your camera. My only complaint about the Eufy solar panel is that the cable is longer than I need, but it cannot be replaced with a shorter one. You can wrap the cable around the back of the solar panel, but it's still a bit cumbersome.

eufy solar panel settings in the Eufy app

As soon as everything is mounted on the Eufy solar panel, open the Eufy app and switch the camera to solar energy. The solar symbol is now next to it, indicating that it has been switched to solar energy. How fast it charges depends on the type of weather you are currently facing. It was very cloudy in the days after installation, so it took longer to charge.

Wrap-up on Eufy solar panel

eufy solar panel

The Eufy solar panel is an ideal addition to Eufy, as the HomeKit connection discharges the battery more than without it. If you want to use Eufy with HomeKit, add this solar panel for the camera locations with access to direct sunlight.

Integrating your cameras into HomeKit is one of the best ways to build your smart home environment. But which cameras are the best? This week I am going to bring you all the info on the best HomeKit cameras to secure the nature of your home in 2021.

HomeKit Weekly is a series that focuses on smart home accessories, tips and tricks on automation, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework.

HomeKit Secure Video

HomeKit Secure Video is not a requirement to use cameras with HomeKit. Some products do not yet support HomeKit, but HomeKit Secure Video.

If a product only supports HomeKit, you can use it for automations like using a camera's motion sensor to trigger a light or showing the live stream in Apple's Home app.

If a product supports HomeKit Secure Video, the camera will save the footage to iCloud. To use HomeKit Secure Video, you need a compatible camera, a HomeKit hub (Apple TV, HomePod or HomePod mini) and at least an iCloud storage plan of 200 GB. If you want to use more than one camera, you'll need the 2TB iCloud storage plan.

HomeKit Secure Video contains end-to-end encryption. As our world becomes more connected, it's even more important to consider the security of your data from the start. In a few decades there will be no more home compared to smart homes. All houses will be smart homes. When you start with a secure foundation, customers can know they can take full advantage of modern conveniences while knowing that their privacy is still intact.

When thinking about putting equipment in your home that you can hear and see, consider the companies that make these products. What are their business models? What is their track record in protecting customer privacy? Is data protection at the core of what the company values? In my experience, Apple is the only big tech company that cares deeply about your privacy. This is why I believe HomeKit Secure Video is an essential part of the smart home experience.

HomeKit cameras for outdoors

With HomeKit cameras outdoors, the first step is to decide whether you want to be battery operated or hardwired. However, both have advantages.

With battery-operated cameras, installation and updating will be straightforward in the future. To get started, you need to do the initial charge, put it on your Wi-Fi network, add it to HomeKit, and then deploy it anywhere you want coverage. However, depending on the camera, you may need to tame it a few times a year to charge it.

One of the aspects of battery operated cameras that I think are underrated is how easy it is to update in the future. If a new model has higher quality or longer battery life, you don't have to worry about plugging the power cord back into an electrical outlet. All you have to do is swap out the cameras.

With hard-wired cameras, you have the advantage that you mount them once and then don't have to worry about it anymore. The main downside here is that you need to power it. Most outdoor cameras generally recommend plugging into an indoor / attic socket, as most plugs are not weatherproof. With a product like SOCKiTBOX you can protect the plug from external elements.

eufyCam series

EufyCam 2 Pro vs Eufy Cam

The eufyCam range has long been one of my favorite HomeKit products. They are available in different models with different battery life and camera quality.

The eufyCam products require a base station connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and the cameras then communicate with the base station. There are no monthly fees for storing on the base station. However, if you use HomeKit Secure Video, you will get the iCloud recurring storage subscription.

HomeKit Eufy

While the Eufy cameras are battery operated, Eufy now offers a solar charging option if your cameras are in a location exposed to direct sunlight. When the Eufy cameras use HomeKit Secure Video, the battery life is not fully reported as they need to communicate with HomeKit. With the solar charging option, you don't have to shut down the cameras to charge.

Arlo cameras

Another popular HomeKit outdoor camera product is the Arlo cameras

Like the Eufy cameras, they are tied to a base station, but are also compatible with HomeKit. The Arlo Pro 3 series is a great option if you want to go in that direction. Still, Arlo has several HomeKit compatible options, including Arlo Ultra, Essential Video Doorbell Wired, Pro 4, Pro 3, Pro 3 Floodlight Camera, Pro 2, and Pro Camera.

However, Arlo cameras do not support HomeKit Secure Video. Arlo sells a cloud-based subscription service for its cameras. It supports viewing your live streams in the Home app and setting up HomeKit automations.

Logitech circle view

Logitech Circle View

Last week I posted my review of the Logitech Circle View camera. For a hardwired HomeKit outdoor camera, it's hard to beat. It's compatible with HomeKit Secure video and doesn't even require a third-party app to use the camera. All firmware updates are carried out wirelessly.

With the Circle View camera in the Home app, I was able to set a recording zone and ignore vehicle detection for areas that drive by frequently. My house is the first in my neighborhood, so cars pass by every few minutes. If this camera were to cover my driveway I would probably want to turn on vehicle detection, but since it covers my side courtyard, I don't want a constant stream of cars driving past my house to clog my HomeKit Secure video feed.

Logitech Circle View in the Home app

Logitech sells a wireless indoor / outdoor camera that supports HomeKit Secure Video. If you need a single area coverage this camera is great, but otherwise it is more cost effective to use one of the Eufy options.

Pack the best HomeKit outdoor cameras

Before deciding which HomeKit cameras to use to secure the exterior of your home, you need to decide whether you want to be battery operated or hardwired. You then need to decide if you need support for HomeKit Secure Video.

I personally use the Eufy cameras and the Logitech Circle View and I am very happy with both products.

There was a pretty blatant loophole in our smart home setup: a doorbell camera. That's because I've been waiting for three boxes to be ticked and the Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell to tick all of them.

First, HomeKit compatibility. For me this is next to non-negotiable when it comes to a smart home kit. The benefits of having everything controlled by an app or by Siri are convincing enough that I'd rather wait than have something that requires me to use a separate app ...

If it's a device me Really I want to, and I'm not willing to wait, then I'll accept something that's Siri Shortcuts compatible as an alternative - but in general I'm not interested if HomeKit doesn't support it.

Second, subscription-free. Many smart cameras are tied to a cloud service from the camera company, so you have to pay a monthly fee to access recordings. I am already paying for two cloud services - iCloud and Dropbox - and am not ready to pay for a third single-application service. Netatmo achieves this through local storage and support for Dropbox and FTP servers In use - access to records Section below.

HomeKit Secure Video is not yet supported, but Netatmo promises that there will be an update for existing doorbells in the future.

Third, mains operated (hard-wired). Our existing bell was a main bell, so I wanted to use this rather than something that would have to replace the batteries. The Netatmo is designed as a straight exchange for a cable bell.

Appearance

The device measures approximately 5 cm high, 2 cm wide and 1 cm deep. When your bell is mounted on your door, it works as it is. However, many wired bells are on one side - including ours. That means the camera needs to be angled towards the door and the kit includes an angled mounting plate that adds some depth.

It's a reasonably classy looking unit divided into thirds. The upper area has an obvious camera, a blue status light, and a small infrared emitter port for nighttime use. There is a relatively small Netatmo logo under the camera.

The middle area is the speaker: the device supports two-way audio. Finally, in the lower area, there is the silver push-button bell with a small bell symbol.

Overall, it looks modern and a bit technical, but is still very pleasing to the eye.

Specifications

The camera is a 2 megapixel camera with 1080p and HDR and infrared for night vision. I cannot comment on the latter as we live in an apartment. So the camera looks into a hallway that is lit around the clock. Likewise, the IP67 seal, since our camera is located indoors.

The field of view is 140 degrees diagonal and the camera is properly oriented in portrait format. You get a 3/4 view of someone actually pressing the doorbell and a full-length view if they even step back half a step.

Wi-Fi is only 2.4 GHz (802.11b / g / n), but that's true for many of our smart home kits. So we have a second SSID for 2.4 GHz, and our router is set to merge the two, which is not a problem for us.

You get two-way audio, motion detection, people detection (but not yet detection), and custom alarm zones.

The memory is located on an embedded SD card (supplied). Currently, you can also record on a Dropbox account or any FTP server. iCloud support will follow.

Installation and setup

The Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell is compatible with most wired doorbell configurations and accepts both mains power and low voltage bells in the 8V to 24V range. As far as I can tell, this is the vast majority of hardwired doorbells.

Netatmo claims the device is suitable for DIY installation, but the reality may depend on your existing doorbell setup. In our case, the wiring runs through the inside of a wall, and it wasn't trivial to release enough wire to make the connection. So the company sent one of their pro installers.

This wasn't a notable success, partly because the installer was struggling with some cabling issues, and partly because the setup turned out to be incompatible with iOS 14.3. To fix this, a different installer was required and it was using an old iPad that was running an older version of iOS. For another problem, the Netatmo Security app had to be removed and reinstalled.

Hopefully these are just teething problems! To be fair to Netatmo, it seemed mostly due to one installer: if the second had done the job and we had known that an older version of iOS was needed, this would have been a lot easier.

In use - doorbell and motion sensor

After the setup was complete, however, everything was fine: the doorbell camera immediately appeared in the Home app, and all of our HomePods acted as chime repeaters. This is excessive in a house the size of a central London apartment, but could be useful in a large house.

When the doorbell rings, the main tone and HomePods will ring, and all iOS devices will receive a pop-up warning. You can tap the alert to see a live view of who's at the door and, if you want, talk to them using an intercom feature.

When you are not at home, you still get full functionality. In this case, the intercom is the most useful: you can talk to the person at the door and make the necessary arrangements. Since our Smart Lock also works remotely, you can also let a friend into the apartment while we are out. The combination is pretty powerful.

In addition to doorbell alarms, you also have the option of receiving motion and personal alarms. Currently the system is intelligent enough to recognize people but not to identify them. This happens when HomeKit Secure Video support is enabled.

In our apartment, the person notifications are not very useful. There are five apartments on our floor, and the person notifications are triggered whenever someone comes out of one of the two elevators or one of our neighbors leaves the house. So I decided to turn this off, but it would be useful for anyone whose front door only or mostly overlooks their property. The app supports custom zones so you can hide any view of the street, neighboring properties, etc.

recordings in the app

In use - access to records

The Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell saves video recordings on an included 8 GB SD card that is embedded in the device itself. You can then access these recordings via WiFi via the app, either for viewing or downloading.

Local recordings, of course, have one potential disadvantage: an intruder could steal the doorbell himself and thus take the recording away. In reality, that's probably not too much of a risk. First, because if a bad guy can even detect a doorbell camera, he'll likely stay free. If they know anything about them, they know that most of the footage is uploaded to the cloud, so there's no point stealing the doorbell.

Second, Netatmo uses a security screw that requires a tool provided to open it to remove the device from the wall. Sure, a bad guy could physically rip it off the wall, but that wouldn't be easy, so here we're in the territory, easier to rob the guy next door. Most security measures work on this basis: They don't make anything impossible, they just make yourself one more challenging target than the next.

However, if you also want cloud storage, you can configure the app to use one of your existing accounts. So I set mine to copy the records to Dropbox. Although no person notifications are activated in the app, every person seen triggers a recording. File names are date, time, reason for recording and an ID.

recordings

The doorbell itself automatically overwrites the oldest recording as soon as the card is full. However, if you automatically download to your own cloud account, you will need to manage this to avoid consuming a lot of space on the video of your delivered post.

For Dropbox, recordings are made in Apps / Netatmo / / 01-2021 (with a new folder name for each month). I just set the folder as a sidebar favorite in the Finder so the recordings are just a click away and I can delete them after a few days.

As mentioned in the introduction, Netatmo also promises to support HomeKit Secure Video. I will update as soon as this happens.

Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell: Prices and Conclusions

In the US, the system costs $ 300. This puts it at $ 200, well above the Logitech Circle.

The main advantage of Netatmo is local storage. That means you don't have to use cloud storage if you don't want to. As long as you have at least a 200GB iCloud subscription, cloud storage for HomeKit Secure Video is free for a single camera - a side benefit of your subscription that doesn't count towards your storage quota.

If you have more than one camera, don't have a 200 GB iCloud subscription or prefer Dropbox, the Netatmo comes into its own. You do not do that to have to use a cloud service if you don't want to. You can still access recordings via WiFi with the iPhone app. However, you can connect it to Dropbox or even your own FTP server if you want.

Apart from the setup and installation issues, it works fine. I tend to get lots of deliveries at best, but even more so during the pandemic lockdown so it's handy to see who's at the door. However, it will be most useful when we can resume our normal lives and the ability to speak to callers remotely and tell them where to leave a package, for example, will indeed come in very handy. It's especially powerful when combined with a smart lock that allows you to talk to someone and then let them in from your iPhone.

A secondary benefit, of course, is security - records of people who have come near your home without ringing the doorbell. All in all, I'd say a doorbell camera is a handy piece of smart home technology, and the Netatmo Smart Video doorbell justifies the premium over the Logitech for some users.

The Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell is available directly from the company's website for $ 299.99.

The HomeKit doorbell scene has finally got wings and one of the most compelling options is Logitech's new Circle View doorbell. It has a sharp and simple design, HomeKit Secure video support, face recognition, and an impressive price tag - especially if you're willing to do the installation yourself. Join our full review of this Logitech HomeKit doorbell, the first true consumer option with HKSV.

The Logitech Circle View doorbell launch back in December was a very welcome surprise with support for HomeKit Secure Video and a solid price tag of $ 199. The only other doorbell on the market with HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) at the time of writing is the Robin ProLine - but that's really more of a commercial product, priced around $ 600.

The Netatmo Smart Video Doorbell, Yobi B3 (Test), and Arlo Smart Doorbell have HomeKit, but include compromises like no HKSV. With a competitive price, HKSV, and features like facial recognition, I think the Logitech Circle View is positioned to own the smart doorbell market among Apple users.

Note: Before you buy the Logitech Circle View doorbell Make sure to use the compatibility checker to confirm that it works in your home.

Design and build

This Logitech HomeKit doorbell is made of high quality plastic with a clean and minimalist black design and a glass faceplate on the front. I think it will look great on the porch of almost any home style.

The camera lens is at the top, the integrated LED is in the middle and there is an illuminated bell button at the bottom.

On the back is the HomeKit code and two pegs that connect the doorbell to the standard or angle bracket.

There is a double rubber seal on the edge of the doorbell to keep rain and snow out. The microphone, speaker, and micro USB port (used for the setup process) are at the bottom.

Logitech HomeKit doorbell set up

As mentioned above, before you buy, make sure that the Logitech Circle View doorbell will work with your existing wired doorbell setup. You can do that here. Otherwise, you may need to do a full re-wiring / doorbell and / or get an electrician.

I'd say if you've done even minor electrical jobs in your house, like replacing switches, sockets, and lights, you will likely feel comfortable installing this HomeKit doorbell yourself. Otherwise, Logitech is offering a Pro install for $ 100 ($ 299 total).

Your mileage may vary, but I think most do-it-yourself installers should be able to do this in around 30 to 60 minutes.

Here's a look at everything that's in the box with the Logitech HomeKit doorbell:

Logitech HomeKit doorbell - what's in the box

On the setup card shown above, you will get a link to detailed installation instructions as well as a second HomeKit code for your doorbell.

Logitech did a good job with the web instructions. Here are the main steps:

  • Temporarily turn on the doorbell via microUSB, set it up, and add it to the Home app
  • Confirm the wiring of your existing doorbell
  • Turn off the breaker on your doorbell wiring and install the Logitech Chime Kit
  • Make sure Circle View has WiFi in the desired installation location, install the bracket and doorbell

The only thing I didn't see explicit instruction on was how to attach your existing wiring to the back of the Logitech mounting plate (unless I somehow missed it). Essentially, it's just a pressure activated harness that you slide your cables into.

Here's a look at the options when setting up this HomeKit Secure Video-enabled doorbell:

You are in control of how streaming and recording work, whether you want to use face recognition, and more.

Logitech HomeKit Doorbell Setup Process 1

You can use the HomePod as a doorbell, actual chimes, or both. You also get a motion sensor and a light sensor that you can use to create home app automations.

In use

I've been using the Logitech HomeKit doorbell for a few weeks and it's consistently reliable and has good picture quality.

If you choose to use facial recognition, it works by accessing the Photos app and / or by using the unidentified recent visitors shown in the Logitech Circle View doorbell settings in the Home app. This makes it easy to add or hide less frequent visitors.

In addition to live face recognition in the Home app for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, the HomePod also offers an audio announcement of the people who are recognized at your front door.

Here's a look at the image quality and more:

Logitech HomeKit doorbell - camera quality

I turned on our porch lights every night as part of a HomeKit automation, but the built-in LED in the Logitech Circle View is pretty bright and gives good visibility even if your porch doesn't have any other lighting.

The calendar integration at the top of the Logitech Doorbell Viewer in the Home app (see above) makes it easy to see previous recordings. HomeKit Secure Video lets you set up 1 camera if you have at least a 200GB iCloud storage plan, or 5 if you have a 2TB plan. That provides a 10-day record history that doesn't eat up any of your iCloud storage. Another great advantage of HKSV is the end-to-end encryption for all of your video recordings.

If you haven't used HomeKit Secure Video before, you can seamlessly set activity zones to choose what triggers alerts. Here you can also add names to unknown faces, control the night vision light and much more.

Logitech HomeKit doorbell settings

The only thing I would criticize constructively would be the camera resolution. It would have been fantastic to have seen something higher than the 1200 x 1600 HD (3: 4 portrait) included here. I don't think it's a deal breaker, the Robin ProLine only offers 720p and the Netatmo and Yobi B3 have 1080p (9:16 portrait).

But I think Logitech could have set the Circle View doorbell even further apart from the competition at 1500 x 2000 or higher.

Logitech HomeKit doorbell final thoughts

All in all, I think this Logitech HomeKit doorbell is the best option out there for Apple users. You get well-designed hardware, HomeKit Secure Video and all of its related features, good HD resolution with HDR and night vision - all for a very affordable price of $ 199.

For comparison, the commercial Robin ProLine models offered by HKSV cost between $ 500 and $ 700. Netatmo's Smart Video Doorbell is $ 299 and it lacks HKSV. The Yobi B3 can sometimes be found under $ 200, but like Netatmo no HKSV and the same for Arlo's wired video doorbell. If you're willing to forego HKSV, the wired version of Arlo might be the tempting HomeKit doorbell for around $ 100.

If you've been waiting for a compelling HomeKit doorbell experience to upgrade from your dumb doorbell or a non-HomeKit smart doorbell, the Logitech Circle View doorbell is definitely worth checking out. You can find it directly from Logitech and Apple.

Accessory manufacturer VOCOlinc today announced a new humidifier that is compatible with HomeKit and other smart home systems. Now the company is also working on its first intelligent camera for its security-oriented product range - and it will be compatible with Apple's HomeKit.

The new VC1 Opto Smart indoor camera has a three megapixel camera that can record videos in a resolution of 1080p. The accessory will also have four infrared LEDs to enable night vision with a range of up to six meters.

How, however, from HomeKit newsThe most important highlight of the new Opto VC1 camera is the support of the HomeKit Secure Video (HSV) system, with which users can access the surveillance cameras from anywhere via the Home app and save the footage in iCloud.

As it will be compatible with the HSV, it will have all the features of the Apple service, including 10 days of video footage, intelligent recognition for people, animals and vehicles, and face recognition. However, you will need an appropriate iCloud plan to take advantage of the HSV features. This starts with the 200 GB plan for one camera or the 2 TB plan that supports up to five cameras.

In addition, the new VOCOlinc camera provides two-way audio and can also rotate 350 ° horizontally and 117 ° vertically. The camera uses a USB-C connection for power supply, which is still a bit rare with accessories in this category.

An upcoming Philips Hue physical wall switch module solves one of the biggest problems faced by smart home fans who share a house with less technical people: if someone uses the physical wall switch to turn off a light, it can no longer be used on Siri controlled.

The smarts for controlling Hue lamps are located in the lamp itself - and they need mains power to receive and respond to app or Siri commands. That is, if someone physically turns off the light, it will no longer be available until you physically turn it on again ...

The company says a solution in the form of a new Philips Hue wall switch module is on the way.

The new Philips Hue wall switch module is the ideal addition to any Philips Hue setup. By installing behind existing light switches, users can turn their existing switch into a smart switch and ensure that their smart lighting is always within reach. Whether via the app or voice control, you no longer have to get up from the couch to turn on the switches that a family member or house guest may have turned off.

In addition, you can simply select light scenes in the Hue app and adjust the functionality of the switch to make the ambience even more personal.

The Philips Hue wall switch module is battery operated and has a minimum lifespan of at least five years.

The new module will go on sale in the spring in Europe and in the summer in the USA and Canada.

However, it's not a cheap solution if you have a lot of hue lighting. US pricing is $ 39.95 or $ 69.95 for a double pack, respectively.

The magnetically mounted dimmer switches that many of us place next to physical switches have also received an unspecified upgrade that appears to be a slight design update.

Finally, there are two new Hue outdoor lights - one completely new, the other a new finish.

With the new Philips Hue Amarant linear spotlight, users can wash exterior walls with light at any time of the year to create the right ambience in their garden. The wall wash effect with living light in millions of colors is enhanced by the metal shield and spices up the appearance of an empty wall in gardens or on balconies. The amaranth can be mounted on the ground or upside down on an overhanging roof to take outdoor lighting decoration to the next level. As part of the LowVolt luminaire collection, it is easy to install and expand with additional luminaires to completely personalize the ambience of your outdoor space.

The Philips Hue Appear, a popular outdoor wall light, now has a brushed stainless steel finish and easy installation. The Inox wall lamp, which provides a strong floating up and down light effect in white and millions of colors, gives the outside area a luxurious feeling. You don't have to mess around with cables when attaching the Appear, you can simply attach the light to the wall with the pin plug. Sit back and relax.

Both will go on sale in Europe on January 26th. The stainless steel appearance appears to be Europe only, while the amaranth will be on sale in the US and Canada starting March 2nd at a price of $ 169.99. They complement the growing range of Hue products.

When I started watching smart video ringtones for my new home, a specific feature I was looking for was HomeKit support, but as it turned out at the time (just 3 months ago), it didn't exist. So, like everyone else, I was content with a ringtone from the Ring, which worked reliably for me. Installation was simple. The setup was a breeze, and daily use was as frictionless as you would expect from a bell.

But then Logitech introduced Circle View Doorbell in December 2020, the first device of its kind to support HomeKit, thus playing nicely with all Apple devices in the house and pocket.

So I contacted the people at Logitech who sent me one Ringtone with circular view after giving me a brief briefing on the product. In this review, I will share your impressions of this smart video sound. But a bit of a warning: this review will be heavily nuanced by my experience with the Ring, which I see as standard in the category or the beating device, if you will.

Initial installation and configuration

Logitech Circle View Doorbell

The installation was a little more boring than the Ring. Where I only had to connect a few wires to the Ring bell, The Circle View required a little more work. Specifically, the installation of a sound kit on your physical bell added something to an otherwise simple installation.

And because Circle View needed more power than Ring, I also had to change the ringer transformer in my house. This is not necessarily difficult to do, but it adds friction to the experience. It also adds costs!

Logitech has an excellent website that guides you through the installation process, but the fact that it needs a website to get started tells you a lot about it. Instead, the installation and configuration of my ring was done in a few minutes following the instructions in 3 steps from a brochure that was in the box.

Once installed, the setup was painless. It is made entirely in Home application and lasts only a few seconds.

To take full advantage of HomeKit support, especially video recordings, you'll need to be on ICloud plan of 200 GB / month or above. If you're under it, you'll still be able to use the ringtone, but features like video recording won't work. You will be able to stream, but not record. This is no different from the Ring, which requires a $ 3 / month plan to offer similar features. It's important to note that although you need a 200GB iCloud plan, videos stored in iCloud don't count in your plan.

Beautiful hardware

The appearance of the Logitech Circle View ringtone is absolutely top notch. It is simple, elegant and has a special feeling, something I can't say about the Ring, which I thought was cheap.

I would argue that the hardware itself is actually the best thing about Soneria Circle View.

Reviews Circle View Doorbell

A lighted circle tells your visitors where to press, but the entire bottom half of the device can be pressed to ring the bell. At night, you have the option to turn on a night light that shines a surprisingly large amount of light at your door. This can be turned off and on in the Home app.

All in all, this is a beautiful piece of hardware. Unlike the ring, which I find quite repulsive to look at, it has a simple and modern design in a small footprint.

But HomeKit ruins them all

If the Logitech Circle View Ring shines with its hardware, it quickly lags behind the Ring in the software department, and that's not Logitech's fault. Choosing to make a HomeKit compatible ringtone, they had to rely entirely on what the Apple Home app can offer to manage all the smart ones.

There aren't many things to ask for from a video ringtone. You want to send / record videos of activities happening at your doorstep, and you want to be informed about these activities. While the transmission / recording of the activity was impeccable, my main problem is how HomeKit does not allow too many customizations of the activity. Notifications.

Home application notification

This quickly became apparent when I began to be inundated with motion notifications. That's because my kids were playing by the font door. My phone literally announces to me every few seconds that there is activity at the door. No big deal, I thought. Ring allows you to postpone / silence these notifications for a certain period of time right from the notification itself, so HomeKit certainly has a similar function. Wrong! Your only option is to set a schedule or turn off motion notifications completely. Although I didn't want to, I chose to completely disable notifications for motion detection. A huge teddy bear if you ask me, because this is one of the best features of smart video ringtone.

Worse than not being able to change my notification settings, I would often receive notifications a few seconds after my activity was detected or someone knocked on my door. In one case, the delivery man rang the bell while I was not home. When I received the notification and opened it to talk to him, the guy was already gone. This happened a few times, enough to make me angry. The people at Logitech told me that I should try to restart my hub (Apple TV or HomePod used as the central brain for all this) or the bell itself. It hasn't changed anything.

The straw that broke the camel back that was when I stopped receiving notifications altogether!

This actually happened yesterday, when I started writing this article and I realized that I had not received a notification for a few days, which is impossible since I knew that my son had rang the bell so he could talk to me while I was at my desk (I know, weird, but it's a quick way for him to plead with me when his mom says he can't watch TV).

So I did a few tests, disabled and re-enabled notifications, but still nothing. Finally, I received notifications of movement activities to return, but no notification for when someone would ring the bell. After the bell restarted, these bell notifications returned temporarily, but 10 minutes later, they disappeared again.

That was enough for me. I grabbed a screwdriver, removed the beautiful Logitech Circle View ringer, and reinstalled the Ugly Ring. And believe me, I cursed through it all!

I put all the blame on HomeKit

In case I haven't been clear before, all these disadvantages have absolutely nothing to do with Soneria Circle View. The device itself is absolutely flawless, but it is kept by HomeKit itself and apparently Logitech can't do anything about it.

Notifications are the only feature a video ringtone needs to correct. Not only did HomeKit fail to get started, but it made me insecure, asking me to ask myself: what's the point of using this if I can't rely on it?

I don't expect progress to be made until iOS 15, because, like most Apple products and services, everything happens on an annual cycle, with little or no improvement between them.

Until then, I'll use the Ring.

Pros and cons of using a HomeKit ringtone

Pro:

  • It plays nicely with all your Apple products
  • Use people from the Photos app for facial recognition
  • Stores videos in iCloud, but isn't based on your iCloud storage plan
  • Announce who is at the door on your HomePod and Apple TV when facial recognition is turned on
  • It can create automations using the Home or Shortcuts application

If you live in an Apple household like me, these are really appealing features.

Versus:

  • Unable to customize notification sound
  • Motion activity notifications cannot be distinguished from ring notifications
  • I can't postpone notifications (ie temporary silence)
  • Unsafe notifications

Logitech Circle View support is available on the Logitech website and starts at $ 199. You can install it professionally for another $ 100.

A new year, which means it's time for TV manufacturers to unveil new TVs. And Sony won't start disappointing you in 2021 as it unveils a handful of new smart handsets.

Today, Sony officially announced five new smart TVs, each coming in several sizes, depending on what you need / want. The functions vary, at least, but all fall under the company's BRAVIA XR brand. This means that they are packed with a number of features designed to enhance the overall viewing experience, no matter what you're watching (or playing with the Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5).

These smart TVs offer standard connectivity options, including wired or wireless, depending on your needs. They range in size from 50 inches to 100 inches. They also include support for Apple AirPlay 2, which means owners don't have to use an Apple TV to stream content from their iPhone or other Apple devices directly to their TV. It also supports HomeKit, which means you can use Siri to control items on your TV, such as power, volume, and more.

At the time of the announcement, we do not yet know the prices for any of the new sets.

Sony 2021 TV Apple TV app

But, I will get out of the way for a moment and let Sony tell you all the most important moments of the new BRAVIA XR smart TVs that it launches today:

  • BRAVIA CORE ™: In collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), BRAVIA CORE ™ is the place where entertainment meets technology and was developed to add value and showcase Sony's unique experiences. Preloaded on all new BRAVIA XR models, users can enjoy a selection of the latest premium and classic SPE titles2 and the largest collection of IMAX Enhanced movies. BRAVIA CORE is the first in the industry to have Pure Stream technology ™, obtaining an equivalent quality UHD BD almost without losses with streaming up to 80 Mbps3. Learn more about this collaboration here: https://www.sony.net/bravia-core
  • Google TV: This range also introduces Google TV, a new entertainment experience that brings together movies, shows, live TV and more from apps and subscriptions4 and organize them just for you. Easily find something to watch with personalized recommendations and bookmark and movie shows in a single watchlist to see what to watch. Users can even add to their watch list on their phone or laptop using Google Search.
  • HDMI 2.1 compatibility: All BRAVIA XR TVs will have HDMI 2.1 compatibility included 4K 120 fps, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)5, Low latency automatic mode (ALLM) and e-ARC, supporting higher resolutions and frame rates ideal for next generation games.
  • Reality sound from the image: In addition to the best image quality in the class, the new XR cognitive processor also delivers incredible sound with Sound-from-Picture Reality ™, which aligns the position of the sound with the images on the screen to provide a unique realistic experience.
  • Hands-free voice function: With hands-free voice control built into Google TVs from Sony6, you can leave the remote control and use your voice only to search for entertainment, receive answers, and control your TV and smart home devices. Try saying "Hey Google, turn on the TV" or "Hey Google, what should I watch?"
  • Compatibility with smart speakers: With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa7 enabled devices, you can project and control YouTube videos with Google Nest speakers8 or change the channel or volume with devices compatible with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.
  • Release of the Creator's intention: The new models will continue to deliver the creator's intent with Netflix calibrated mode, featuring quality studio and IMAX® Enhanced ™ Netflix content that features remastered IMAX images and sounds, as well as IMAX Enhanced mode - fully optimized for movie playback.

You can expect to find these new features in all new handsets, which is good because Sony brings the flagship items to all sizes and ranges. And with full support for all new primary sales features (VRR, ALLM and 4K 120 fps) for the latest Microsoft and Sony video game consoles, this is also a win-win for potential owners.

Here are the new TVs:

  • MASTER Z9J Series with 8K LED: Comes in 85 or 75 inches
  • MASTER A90J series with 4K OLED: comes in either 83-inch, 65-inch and 55-inch
  • A80J with 4K OLED: Comes in 77 inches, 65 inches and 55 inches
  • X95J with 4K LED: Comes in 85 inches, 75 inches and 65 inches
  • X92 with 4K LED: Comes in either 100 inches, 75 inches, 65 inches, 55 inches or 50 inches.

Unfortunately, as mentioned above, we do not know when, exactly these new TVs will become available. And we still don't know how much they will cost. Sony says prices and availability will be announced sometime this spring.

If you want to find out more about each TV and see the landing page for each, click on the links above.

Free, open-source Scenecuts application from Seattle developer Nick Hayward is a great little utility that lets you bypass Apple's awesome Home app and access your smart devices at home and trigger HomeKit scenes directly via the macOS menu bar.

Just click the Scenecuts icon in the menu bar to display a drop-down menu that contains all the HomeKit scenes you've created in the Apple Home app. The application is widely configurable: you can edit this drop-down menu, add or remove individual HomeKit scenes from it, and more.

This allows you to turn off all the scenes you don't need to quickly locate the ones you use most often. In the latest update, the app added support for default HomeKit scenes from the menu bar via the Apple Symbols SF font, virtually turning HomeKit scenes into individual menu bar items (similar to how you can drag items from the Control Center to the bar of the menu.

Scenecuts for macOS Mac 001

John Voorhees, writing at MacStories:

You can add an icon to any of the scenes you add to the menu bar using Apple's SF symbols. I immediately added separate items from the menu bar for the space heater in my office and the settings for the top lights I use to shoot the products, as these are two scenes I want to shoot regularly from my desk. Using SF symbols is a great way to choose something meaningful and memorable for triggering scenes.

Thanks to the app's global shortcuts, you can enable scenes without clicking the macOS menu bar (customize these useful shortcuts to your liking in Scenecuts settings). Hayward notes that Scenecuts currently only supports the main house in the Home app. In addition, the support application must be running for Scenecuts to work.

Scenecuts requires macOS 11.0 Big Sur or later.

Download free MacOS Scenecuts from the App Store.
