HomeKit week in review: eero 6 router support thread, HomePod Mini is a big seller, and more

Cupertino, January 12, 2022

The summer slump seems to be here, as there wasn't much to report this week. Nevertheless, we look back at the past seven days and summarize the news for you once again.

Aqara TVOC: Air quality sensor tried out

Earlier this week, we shared our experience with Aqara's HomeKit air quality sensor.

Aqara TVOC: Air Quality, Humidity and Temperature Always in View

The Aqara TVOC is a pretty device with an integrated display that shows air quality as well as temperature and humidity. The sensors are great for automations, such as turning on the bathroom fan when humidity is too high or starting the air purifier when air quality is poor.

Automation of the week: Window open reminder

During the summer months, we almost constantly have some windows open, which in the past we often forgot to open when we left them.

Window Open Reminder (Summer Edition)

That's why, in our latest Automation of the Week, we show you how you can be reminded that windows are still open when you leave your own four walls.

eero has released a new firmware version 6.4 for the eero 6 and eero Pro 6. After installation you have to enable Thread manually in the settings.

eero 6: New HomeKit firmware is distributed

The Thread wireless standard already plays an important role in HomeKit. With the launch of Matter in the fall, Thread will find its way into more and more smarthome devices.

HomePod Mini is a big seller

We were little surprised by the smart speaker sales figures released this week by Omdia in the US. While Apple's big HomePod only had a 10.2% market share last year, the HomePod Mini more than doubled that number to 24.6% this year.

Amazon, in particular, had to give up a big piece of the pie. From 56.9%, its market share fell to just 33.6% and is now behind Google with 41.8%.
