HomeKit has evolved into a robust platform, with Apple continually enhancing its features while maintaining a strong commitment to privacy. They’ve also been instrumental in developing the Matter standard, which broadens the capabilities of the Home app. However, there's a significant issue that needs addressing: HomeKit Secure Video. Many vendors are neglecting it, and while this isn't entirely Apple's fault, it is a problem they need to resolve.

What is HomeKit Secure Video?

HomeKit Secure Video was Apple’s response to the smart home video solutions offered by Amazon and Google, debuting in 2019. It enables the integration of home security cameras with the Home app, where footage is privately analyzed on your Home hub before being securely stored in iCloud. A notable advantage is that it doesn't impact your iCloud storage limits. Designed with privacy in mind, all data remains end-to-end encrypted, meaning only you and trusted individuals can view the recordings—not even Apple can access them. It’s a solid feature that aligns with Apple’s broader commitment to data security.

What are some of my favorite HomeKit Secure Video Cameras?

All of the cameras mentioned above are excellent options for HomeKit Secure Video. They come from various manufacturers and have proven to be reliable. I confidently recommend any of these cameras for use with HomeKit Secure Video.

Where are the new cameras?

Examining the release dates for these cameras, not a single one was launched in 2024. Most were released between 2020 and 2021. Aqara has introduced a few new cameras in recent years, and Eve launched its flood camera in 2022. Earlier this year, we also discussed the uncertainty around Logitech’s HomeKit Camera lineup and whether they were still available for sale.

Why this is Apple’s problem

As mentioned earlier, Apple cannot force manufacturers to release new cameras, but they should be aware of this issue. Historically, Apple has been cautious about relying on external vendors. For instance, Apple faced issues in the 1990s when Microsoft's support for Office on Macs lagged behind.

Google and Amazon produce and support their own cameras, giving them control over their smart home video solutions. It’s high time Apple followed suit. The lack of revenue from HomeKit Secure Video cameras may dissuade vendors from innovating further, which is understandable. Google offers a Nest Aware subscription that enhances its first-party cameras. Personally, I use Google Nest Flood Cameras coupled with Starling Home Hub to bridge them to HomeKit and HomeKit Secure Video, as I'm dissatisfied with the current innovation in HomeKit-supporting cameras.

So, what’s the solution for Apple? The answer is clear: Apple needs to take charge and develop its own range of smart cameras that fully utilize the latest HomeKit features. By doing so, Apple can set a new benchmark in the smart home camera market, much like they’ve done in other categories. It's time for a new wave of innovation, where Apple’s signature design meets cutting-edge technology—a product that not only looks great but also seamlessly integrates with the HomeKit ecosystem, delivering the privacy, security, and ease of use that Apple users expect.
