How to make Apple TV your HomeKit hub

Cupertino, February 29, 2024

If you're in the market for an Apple HomeKit hub, your options are limited. While many users opt for a HomePod or HomePod mini to act as the central hub for their smart home, you can also use Apple TV in this role. Setting up a HomePod automatically designates it as a HomeKit hub, but the same isn't true for Apple TV. Here's what you need to do to set up Apple TV as a HomeKit hub.

To get Apple TV to work as a HomeKit hub, you first need to add it to HomeKit. Once you do this, it will automatically function as a home hub. Thankfully, this process is quick and easy. Here's how:

  1. Go to your Apple TV and open the Settings menu.
  2. Navigate to the Users & Accounts menu and ensure your name is set as the default user.
  3. Make sure you're connected to iCloud with the same Apple ID linked to HomeKit in your Home app.
  4. Return to the Settings menu on Apple TV and select AirPlay and HomeKit.
  5. Go to the Room option and create a new room for Apple TV or add it to an existing room.
  6. Once this is complete, your Apple TV should be synced with HomeKit.

Using Apple TV as a HomeKit hub offers several advantages. You can navigate through a visual interface instead of solely using voice commands (which is the only option with HomePod). Additionally, because Apple TV is connected to a screen, you can view live video feeds from home cameras or adjust settings directly from your TV. This is particularly useful for properties with numerous cameras or if you prefer controlling HomeKit with a screen rather than voice commands.
