How to Set Up Apple TV as a HomeKit Hub

Cupertino, August 16, 2023

If you're in search of an Apple HomeKit hub, your options are limited. While many users opt for a HomePod or HomePod mini to serve as the central control for their smart home, you can also use an Apple TV as a hub. However, setting up Apple TV as a HomeKit hub requires a few extra steps. Here's a guide on how to do it.

Step 1: Open the Settings menu on your Apple TV.
Step 2: Navigate to the Users and Accounts menu and ensure that your name is set as the Default User.
Step 3: Make sure your Apple TV is connected to iCloud using the same Apple ID connected to HomeKit in your Home app.
Step 4: Return to the Settings menu and select AirPlay and HomeKit.
Step 5: Choose the Room option and create a new room for Apple TV or add it to an existing room.
Step 6: Once these steps are completed, your Apple TV will be synced with HomeKit.

Using Apple TV as a HomeKit hub offers some advantages. You can navigate through a visual interface instead of relying solely on voice commands, like with HomePod. Additionally, since Apple TV is connected to a display, you can view live video feeds from your home's cameras and adjust settings directly from your TV. This makes it particularly useful for properties with multiple cameras or for those who prefer controlling HomeKit using a screen rather than voice commands.
