IKEA Home smart: Teaching new devices no longer requires remote control

Cupertino, October 2, 2021

Until now, teaching new devices to the IKEA TRÅDFRI gateway often required a remote control. With the latest app update, IKEA has finally changed that.

The IKEA TRÅDFRI system is delightfully affordable. Once you have purchased the gateway for 20€, you can then integrate a wide variety of switches, lamps, drivers, sockets and blinds into the system from 6€. However, some devices previously required a remote control, which was required once for the installation.

IKEA TRÅDFRI Remote Control

The reason why IKEA required the remote control to be taught was not only a mystery to us. The procedure also met with criticism from numerous customers. The furniture giant has reacted to this with the now published app update and no longer requires a remote control for lamps and drivers.

Updates for numerous TRÅDFRI devices released

Just earlier this week, IKEA started giving updates to numerous TRÅDFRI devices. In total, new firmware has been released for 20 devices, including the gateway, numerous lamps and also the FYRTUR and KADRILJ roller blinds. Most of the updates are bug fixes and stability improvements. If you use IKEA Home smart, it's worth taking a look at the app.
