It’s not just Billy bookcases and meatballs you can pick up at IKEA — the Swedish home furnishings retailer also boasts a growing line of own-brand electronics products. If recent leaks are any indication, their next launch will be particularly enticing for those with an Apple HomeKit smart home setup.
As reported by Zatz Not Funny, IKEA is preparing to release two new smart home sensors, which were filed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in June.
The first product, known as the ‘Parasoll Open / Close’ sensor, monitors the opening and closing actions of devices like doors and windows. It communicates wirelessly with smart home controllers and utilizes a magnetic fob. Judging by the name, it seems designed perhaps for use with a patio or garden parasol’s open and close mechanism.
The second product, the Vallhorn Motion sensor, is a motion sensor that, as its name suggests, detects movement or proximity. This sensor could presumably be paired with other smart home devices to trigger specific actions based on detected motion.
Currently, no details regarding the release date or pricing of these products have been disclosed.
HomeKit Future
Although these devices utilize the Zigbee smart home standard, which isn’t directly compatible with Apple’s HomeKit, they are expected to require a connection to IKEA’s Dirigera or Tradfri smart home hubs. These hubs are compatible with HomeKit, thus bridging the gap between the two standards.
It's admittedly a bit cumbersome and speaks to the fragmented nature of Apple HomeKit support when integrating third-party systems. However, this might soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the Matter smart home standard. Designed to unify all major smart home systems, Matter is compatible with HomeKit and is poised to become the default standard for all manufacturers.
Meanwhile, there's still a robust, albeit smaller, HomeKit ecosystem worth exploring. Check out our top picks for HomeKit gear at the links below:
