Inexperienced Reddit Moderators Foster Hazardous Advice

Cupertino, September 5, 2023

Reddit moderators who participated in protests against the company's API charges claim that they have been replaced by individuals who lack subject matter expertise. This has resulted in dangerous advice being posted and going unchallenged in various subreddits, including topics such as canning food and 3D printing firearms. The removal of these moderators came after Reddit faced backlash for implementing unrealistic charges to access the API, which impacted third-party apps like Apollo. Users and moderators expressed concerns about the accessibility features for disabled moderators being compromised. Some subreddits adopted a tactic of labeling themselves as NFSW to prevent Reddit from selling ads. Those who refused to end their protests were removed by Reddit staff, leading to the absence of experienced moderators who are essential for identifying incorrect advice that can put people at risk. Examples of dangerous advice remaining on the platform include unsafe canning practices that can lead to fatal botulism and the sharing of recipes with no tested process. In other subreddits like r/homeautomation and r/ender3, warnings about electrical circuit dangers and expertise in identifying unsafe and illegal posts are no longer visible due to the lack of experienced moderators. The loss of these moderators and API policies has caused numerous issues within the Reddit community.
