Kwikset Unveils Smart Lock Featuring Matter over Thread Technology

Cupertino, October 21, 2024

The US-based lock experts Kwikset have unveiled a brand new smart lock, marking their first model equipped with Matter over Thread. Although it’s not their inaugural smart lock, it is the first to incorporate both the cutting-edge smart home connectivity standard and  the preferred wireless protocol for smart homes.

The Kwikset Halo Select serves as a standard deadbolt and is primarily designed for the North American market, offered in two finishes: Satin Nickel and Matte Black. True to the features expected from smart locks, it includes a touchscreen keypad along with a traditional keyhole for manual unlocking. A notable advantage is that, according to the manufacturer, this lock can be easily rekeyed, enabling you to maintain the use of your existing keys if desired.

While it supports Matter over Thread for seamless integration into all Matter-enabled smart home platforms (including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings), it also provides an alternative to bypass Matter integration entirely using a built-in WiFi module and the company's proprietary app. This option remains compatible with Amazon and Google through a cloud-based connection, featuring exclusive capabilities such as geofence auto-lock, guest access management, intrusion detection, and the ability to monitor the door status using a built-in door sensor. However, this method does not allow for compatibility with other smart devices within your Apple Home ecosystem.

Unfortunately, one feature notably absent from this lock is Apple HomeKey, which many Apple Home users currently consider essential. While fingerprint sensors have gained popularity, and thus HomeKey might not be a priority for all, the lack of a fingerprint sensor alongside this feature could suggest that the company has overlooked several recent advancements in smart lock technology. As with most locks, it operates on four standard AA batteries.

However, for those prioritizing security, this lock boasts the highest residential security certification (ANSI/BHMA Grade AAA), and it also comes with a lifetime warranty for the mechanical components and the exterior finish. The smart components of the lock carry a standard 12-month warranty.
