MacRumors' Review of the Presence Sensor FP2

Cupertino, August 6, 2023

Aqara recently released the Presence Sensor FP2, a new millimeter wave sensor that surpasses the capabilities of traditional motion sensors. This sensor uses millimeter wave radar technology to detect human presence in a room with greater precision than passive infrared sensors. It can even detect subtle movements like breathing. This precision allows for more specific automations, such as turning on lights when someone is in an area, even with minimal movement that other sensors may not detect.

The sensor comes with a USB-A to USB-C power cable, magnetic mounting plates, a screw, a wall anchor, and a manual. It has a compact design with a round housing and a matt white finish, making it easy to blend into any room. The base of the sensor is magnetic, allowing it to be mounted on walls or ceilings. It is also water and dust resistant, making it suitable for humid environments like bathrooms or outdoor areas.

Setup is simple, and the sensor can be used with or without an Aqara hub over Wi-Fi. The Aqara app allows users to customize the sensor's settings, including different detection zones and targets. It can even track multiple people at once and determine their real-time location in a room. The sensor's built-in light sensor is also compatible with HomeKit.

Priced at $82.99, the Presence Sensor FP2 offers advanced features and superior functionality compared to basic motion sensors. It can function as up to 30 individual motion sensors in Apple's Home app with exceptional sensitivity and accuracy. It is compatible with Matter and Aqara plans to introduce more features in the future. The only downside is that it requires wired power, unlike battery-powered motion sensors.

The FP2 occupancy sensor is available on Amazon in North America and Europe, as well as select Aqara retailers worldwide. Aqara is currently offering a 15% discount on Amazon until April 22 with the provided discount codes. Please note that the FP2 sensor was provided by Aqara for this review and no other compensation was received.
