MacRumors' Review of the Video Doorbell G4

Cupertino, August 1, 2023

The Aqara Video Doorbell G4 is the first smart doorbell that operates on battery power and supports HomeKit Secure Video. It is available in many regions worldwide and offers a wide range of features, including 1080p video recording, a 162-degree wide angle lens, two-way audio communication, motion detection, night vision, weather resistance, and support for up to 512 GB microSD cards. The Doorbell G4 is priced at $119.99 and comes with various accessories.

The design of the Doorbell G4 is sleek and modern, with a black or space gray "Shadow" finish. The top of the doorbell houses the camera, LED status light, motion sensor, and microphone. The bottom button is lit by an LED and provides a satisfying click when pressed. The sides feature a speaker for audio output and a screw that releases the back plate. The doorbell is made from durable plastic and has an IPX3 rating for weather resistance.

Setting up the Doorbell G4 is similar to other Aqara devices, as it does not require a hub. The Aqara app guides users through the setup process, which also updates the device firmware if necessary. The doorbell can be added to Apple's Home app for access to HomeKit Secure Video. The Aqara app provides additional customization options, such as motion detection settings and video resolution.

The Doorbell G4 captures a 16:9 field of view, which may not capture objects close to the doorbell. Notifications and integration with Apple TV and HomePod work seamlessly, with instant display of the video feed on a TV screen. Native Apple Home features like facial recognition and motion detection work well, but Aqara advises against using the motion sensor for extended periods if relying on battery power alone. The speaker on the doorbell is adequate, and the repeater can be adjusted for volume in the Aqara app.

The Aqara Video Doorbell G4 supports Matter when the specification for cameras is released. It offers excellent integration with HomeKit and is a versatile smart doorbell with multiple mounting options and customizable software settings. It is an ideal choice for those wanting a battery-powered HomeKit Secure Video smart doorbell. However, some improvements could be made, such as a squarer field of view and rechargeable battery options.

The Aqara Smart Video Doorbell G4 is priced at $119.99 and can be purchased from Amazon and select Aqara retailers worldwide.
