New TVs now support HomeKit, AirPlay and more with LG's extended compatibility

Cupertino, August 8, 2023

LG has made an exciting announcement regarding an expansion of TVs that now support the Apple TV app, AirPlay, HomeKit, and Apple Music. These features were previously only available on LG's webOS TVs but are now being extended to third-party TVs running the webOS Hub software. According to LG's press release, TVs from 200 other brands can now support the webOS Hub software, including Seiki, Eko, Stream System, Konka, Aiwa, and Hyundai, among others. However, it is important to note that there are certain restrictions on which TVs from these brands will add support for the Apple features. Here's a summary of the new features, as described by LG:
- Apple TV+ app to access TV+ content, movies, and TV shows from iTunes, and Apple TV channels for third-party streaming services
- Apple Music with Apple Music Radio, Live Lyrics, full library access, and more
- AirPlay to stream movies, music, games, and photos from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to your smart TV
- HomeKit support for controlling your TV through the Apple Home app and with Siri
LG has clarified that AirPlay and HomeKit are only available on OLED TVs and UHD TVs powered by webOS Hub 2.0, which was released last year. However, a much wider selection of webOS Hub-powered TVs in over 100 countries will have access to the Apple TV app and Apple Music apps. This expansion is remarkable considering the variety of TVs supported by the webOS Hub software in different price ranges worldwide. If you own a TV, it would be useful to check if it is included in this rollout. Let us know in the comments section. (FTC: We use auto affiliate links that generate revenue. More.)
