Shenzhen-based smart home manufacturer Onvis has been progressing towards Thread (and occasionally Matter) compatibility for some time now, offering products like smart plugs, wireless controllers, alarms, and more. Today, they have introduced their first outdoor motion sensor, featuring HomeKit over Thread. Impressively, it outperforms more expensive options from other smart home companies in several aspects.

The Smart Motion Sensor-Outdoor, or SMS2-OD, is designed to differentiate itself from the SMS2, which is an indoor motion sensor. Presented in matte black, it includes a protective 'hood' to shield the sensor from dirt and rain, though it is officially IP66 rated for outdoor use. This rating is a significant advantage over competitors like the Eve motion sensor, which is only IPX3 rated, and the Philips Hue outdoor model, rated at IP44.

The sensor comes with an adjustable wall mount for easy installation, as well as sturdy double-sided adhesive strips for those who prefer not to drill into walls. The mount can also be detached for freestanding use. Additionally, the protective hood is removable if the sensor is placed in a sheltered area.

What differentiates the SMS2-OD from other motion sensors is the inclusion of temperature and humidity sensors, alongside the main motion sensor, similar to its indoor counterpart. Situated below the motion sensor's main fresnel lens is a light sensor, though it is primarily for distinguishing between day and night and does not provide lumen information nor is it exposed to Apple Home.

The motion sensor offers a detection range of up to 10 meters (32 feet) with a 100º field of view. It operates within a temperature range of -10~45ºC (-14~113ºF), which may not be ideal for extreme winter conditions in places like Canada but is suitable for most users. It is powered by two AA batteries, which are claimed to last up to four years before needing replacement.

The Onvis SMS2-OD is available for preorder on Amazon.com starting September 14th, with an official release date of September 16th, priced at US$39.99. Customers in the EU and UK can expect it to arrive in stores by September 30th.
