If you are tired of switching your accessories one by one in the Home app, then you need to know how to create groups in the Home app. With just a few taps you can connect similar accessories, such as lamps or smart sockets. We'll show you how to create, edit, and delete groups in the Home app. What are HomeKit accessory groups? Just as you organize your smart home with Rooms and Zones, groups in the Home app do the same for your HomeKit accessories. Essentially, Home app groups let you combine multiple accessories into one, leading to fewer taps and voice commands. If you're familiar with HomeKit, you might already be thinking: can't we create HomeKit scenes in the Apple Home app to combine accessories? While the answer is technically yes, Home app groups take a different approach. Image credits: OmniaBlinds Unlike HomeKit scenes, Home app groups can only consist of similar smart accessory types. This restriction means that you can combine all the lights in a room into one, but there will be no blinds, TVs, or smart plugs that are not assigned as lights. Groups also differ in appearance and functionality in the Home app. After you create a group, all accessories will appear as one device tile and not as a larger scene tile. When you tap to access the group's controls, you'll only see one toggle switch, dimmer control, or color picker. Since the group appears as an accessory, you can include it in your HomeKit scenes. This bypasses a HomeKit limitation where scenes cannot contain other scenes. How to group your HomeKit accessories in the Home app To create an accessory group, first launch the Home app. Then tap the More... button in the top right corner of your screen and then select a room with a tap. In a room view, tap an accessory to reveal the device controls, then tap the Settings button in the bottom right. Tap Group with other accessories... then use the keyboard to name your group, then tap done. Now tap on the accessories you want to add to your group. When you're done adding accessories, tap Done to save your group. Your group will now appear as one accessory in the Home app. Edit an existing accessory group in the Home app If you already have an accessory group and want to add or remove devices, you can do so with just a few taps. Launch the Home app and then tap the More... button in the top corner of your screen. Next, tap a room and then tap your accessory group. Now tap the Settings icon at the bottom, followed by Accessories. In group view, tap Edit in the top right corner, then tap the accessories you want to add or remove. Finally, tap Done to save your changes. Deleting an accessory group in the Home app Just like editing your groups, you can delete a group at any time. Launch the Home app, tap the More... button at the top of your screen, then tap a room. Now tap on a grouped accessory, followed by the Settings icon in the lower right corner. Scroll down and then tap the Ungroup Accessories option to remove the group. Less taps, more time with HomeKit groups Organizing your HomeKit home into groups means you spend less time switching individual accessories, giving you more time to enjoy your smart home.
