Review of Onvis Smart Motion Sensor with HomeKit Integration

Cupertino, February 9, 2024

Onvis is one of the most reliable HomeKit vendors out there. They make quality products and are usually among the first to use new technology such as Thread. I recently purchased the new Onvis Smart Motion Sensor to automate some of our living room lights and track temperature at the same time. HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything related to Apple's smart home framework. What can you do with the Onvis Smart Motion Sensor? The Onvis Smart Motion Sensor registers movement, but also does more. It also tracks room temperature and humidity. You can track these metrics and create automation via Siri and the Home app. If you're checking humidity below a certain level, you can turn on a HomeKit humidifier to increase the levels. If you use the Onvis app, you can also access this data and it will be stored locally for 32 days. Because the Onvis Smart Motion Sensor is battery powered, it can easily be placed on a bookshelf or hidden behind something, as long as it has a line of sight. Set up with HomeKit The Onvis Smart Motion Sensor is HomeKit native, meaning there is no bridging from another app in the software. There's a HomeKit QR code on the side of the device, so once you pull the battery tab you can scan it using the Home app > + > Add Accessory. It took about a minute for the Home app to connect to it, but then I was able to name the device and select the room in my house where it would be located. You can also change that in the future. HomeKit automations are where the device shines. We have three different sets of lights on the main floor of our house that we usually turn on first thing in the morning. With this device I constructed an automation that sets these lights to a certain dimmer level when motion is detected between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. The idea is that when I wake up in the morning, it detects me and automatically turns on the lights at the preset level. Every morning I manually turn on these lights when I wake up. Now it is fully automated. Rounding out Onvis Smart Motion Sensor Overall, it's a great option for HomeKit if you need a motion sensor. It's an important bonus that also tracks temperature and humidity. There is no Onvis cloud and no tracking of your data. Everything stays local on your device and in HomeKit. It also supports Thread for improved reliability. You can pick up the Onvis Smart Motion Sensor from Amazon or directly from Onvis. FTC: We use monetized auto-affiliate links. More.
