Roku introduces AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for 4K devices

Cupertino, March 25, 2024

In September, Roku announced that the upcoming version of its TV operating system, Roku OS 9.4, would bring support for Apple's AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. Today, the company revealed that these features have been rolled out to select 4K Roku devices like the Roku Ultra, Roku Streambar, Roku Smart Soundbar, Roku Streaming Stick+, and Roku Premiere. The update will soon be available for 4K Roku TV as well.

With AirPlay 2 support, Roku users can now stream content from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to their Roku device. This includes personal content from their own library or from other streaming apps that also support AirPlay 2. This could be beneficial in situations where a new streaming service does not have an app for Roku devices or threatens to remove an existing app as part of licensing negotiations, such as NBCU's recent actions. By being able to stream content from a compatible device like an iPhone, customers can still access the content they want.

In addition to AirPlay 2, Roku OS 9.4 also introduces support for HomeKit, which allows users to control their Roku device using the Home app and Siri on their Apple devices. Other changes in this update include a new "Live TV" tile on the home screen featuring a live guide for The Roku Channel's free live channels, improved voice command functionality, and optional theme packs with added sounds.
