Before you can dive into IKEA's smart home ecosystem, however, you'll need to set up a DIRIGERA Smart Hub. We'll show you how easy it is to get your new hub up and running.

What is the IKEA DIRIGERA Smart Hub?

The DIRIGERA Smart Hub acts as a command center for IKEA's line of smart home accessories. With a DIRIGERA hub you can control smart plugs, lighting, blinds and more via the IKEA Home Smart App, available on iOS and Android. IKEA's hub communicates with the company's smart home accessories via Zigbee, a short-range wireless networking standard. Zigbee offers lower power consumption than traditional standards such as Wi-Fi, and its built-in mesh networking technology allows users to extend range simply by adding additional products to their home.

The DIRIGERA hub connects to your home network via Ethernet and needs a constant power source to keep everything running. Once connected, the IKEA Home Smart App offers the ability to create groups and scenes with multiple accessories and integration with other ecosystems such as Alexa, Google Home and Apple's HomeKit. While IKEA previously offered the TRADFRI gateway to manage its smart home ecosystem, the newer DIRIGERA hub expands on its predecessor by offering more connectivity options. This upgrade includes future compatibility with Matter, which promises true cross-platform support no matter which phone or voice assistant your family relies on.
