Collaboration with Matter promotes cross-platform compatibilityStewart Wolpin ⋅ Published: December 5, 2023 (image credit: Samsung) SmartThings, Samsung's smart home platform, has announced a partnership with Eve Systems for Android phone users to monitor energy consumption of large and small appliances and potentially save money on their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint. Consumers will have to plug all their devices, Samsung or not, into a Matter-compatible Eve Energy smart plug ($39.95). Energy consumption can then be monitored and tracked via the iOS or Android app Samsung SmartThings to calculate energy consumption and monthly costs. To help optimize or reduce energy consumption and save money, consumers can create automation routines and set timers to streamline daily tasks. (image credit: Stewart Wolpin/Samsung) “In a world where smart homes are becoming increasingly complex, our mission at SmartThings is to make it easy for users to manage their devices and reduce energy consumption,” said Mark Benson, head from SmartThings US “This integration of the Eve Energy Plug into the SmartThings ecosystem is an important step toward that goal: providing consumers with the data they need to make the most energy-efficient decisions.” According to both companies, SmartThings-Eve Energy compatibility with Matter promotes cross-platform compatibility and makes energy savings accessible to a broader range of consumers. Built on Thread, Eve Energy's smart plugs connect directly to compatible SmartThings hubs, so they work straight out of the box. And since Matter is designed to operate on a local wireless network without the need for a cloud connection, Eve Energy requires no registration and has no usage tracking. “We are excited to work with SmartThings to extend the app's power monitoring features to a Matter smart plug for the first time,” said Jerome Gackel, CEO of Eve Systems, which was first founded in 1999 as Elgato. “The benefits for consumers are enormous, because reducing the costs and environmental impact of your energy consumption always starts with tracking your consumption.” Eve Energy smart plug power monitoring and control is already available for iPhone and iPad via Apple's HomeKit ecosystem and app or via the iOS Eve Energy app. Eve Energy's smart plug is also compatible with voice commands from Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri.
