If you're not located in the US, you may be understandably intrigued by the headline! No need to worry; a company named 'Big Ass Fans' actually exists and has now announced Matter support for a range of their current ceiling fans. This includes models such as the i6, es6, Haiku, Haiku Coastal, Turbo6, Speakeasy, and the entire Haiku lineup, alongside all future WiFi-enabled ceiling fan products.
These fans operate on Matter over WiFi, meaning no Thread support is required. Given that the company's products weren't even compatible with HomeKit prior to this development, the Matter update now provides official support. Before this announcement, HomeBridge was the primary solution to integrate these fans into your Apple Home.
If you own any of the listed fans prior to this announcement, the company indicates that select Haiku and Haiku L models will be Matter-compatible depending on when they were purchased. You can verify the compatibility of your Haiku and Haiku L fans by downloading the Big Ass Fans app, which should inform you if a Matter update is available.
While many of the residential fans are now compatible with Matter, their large industrial and commercial fans, evaporative coolers, heaters, and directional fans do not support Matter. Importantly, some of these fans also include lighting capabilities, which will be integrated into your preferred Matter platform:
Regarding lighting, while adjusting the color temperature should be possible, it appears that Adaptive Lighting won't be an option at this time.
You can explore the range of fans offered by the company through their ‘big ass’ online store (pun intended).
