Tado Moves Towards Matter with Upcoming Lineup

Cupertino, May 15, 2024

Tado, a European brand renowned for smart heating devices, is set to introduce a new line of products supporting both the Matter and Thread standards. First announced on matter-smarthome.de, the Tado X series will soon be available in most central European countries, followed by the UK. This does not mean that their existing products will be updated with Matter or Thread, but they will still receive continuous support and updates. For the past few years, we have been using three Tado Smart AC control V3+ units in our home and have experienced very few issues. Read our V3+ product review HERE.

Some of Tado’s existing products utilize a specific radio frequency (868 MHz 6LoWPAN) for communication. It requires a bridge to connect your smart home devices. A new model of this bridge will be available for sale. With the onset of Thread, this bridge will not be as necessary, as initial reports indicate Thread will initially be limited to Apple home users.

The newly launching products will include the Smart Thermostat X, designed to replace a wired controller and will offer compatibility with two heating interface options: on/off (mechanical) and OpenTherm (digital). Besides working with a boiler or zone valve, it can also serve as a thermostat for rooms equipped with water-based floor heating.

The new wireless temperature sensor X is similar to the wall thermostat and can be conveniently placed anywhere within a room. It is designed for central control of multiple radiator thermostats or to complement the wired room controller, especially if the latter is located in a position that might impact accurate temperature readings.

The Smart Radiator Thermostat X has a unique T-shaped design, differing from previous Tado models to save space in tight radiator environments. Featuring a touch display instead of conventional rotary elements for temperature adjustments, it is powered by a lithium-ion battery that can be charged with a regular USB-C cable and generally lasts for approximately a year on a single charge.

Aforementioned Bridge X, enables a Thread network for communication between heating controllers when required. However, its services are not required if another device is performing this function.

The final product to be unveiled is the Heat Pump Optimiser X, designed to be wired to your existing heat pump for hot water, which can simultaneously function with Tado’s smart thermostats.

These products can now be purchased directly from Tado’s online shop at the following prices:

  • Smart Radiator Thermostat X – €99.99
  • Wireless Temperature Sensor X – €99.99
  • Smart Thermostat X (Wired) – €134.99
  • Heat Pump Optimiser X – €249.99

We are pleased to see Tado expanding their product range to include newer standards and wireless protocols.
