TP Link's latest Smart Lock features HomeKey and a video doorbell

Cupertino, January 10, 2024

In what seems like a good year for both Matter and Apple Home at CES, the latest device to join the lineup of announcements is from TP-Link, whose new Tapo DL130 Smart Video Lock has a lot to offer. It is not only a smart lock, as the name suggests, but also a video doorbell! The DL130 claims to offer up to seven different unlocking methods on the device; a built-in fingerprint sensor, keypad for passcodes, via an app (the Tapo app or Apple Home), RFID, similar to NFC, a physical key, using a voice assistant, or best of all: Apple HomeKey. That's a total of eight methods, but we suspect that RFID and HomeKey are being lumped together in this case. As you can see, this not only works with Apple Home, but also with Amazon Alexa and Google Home. SmartThings isn't mentioned here, but assuming a Matter update is in the offing, this could allow it to work with that platform automatically. In addition to the lock portion of the DL30, we have a video doorbell with a 2K, 5 MP camera to capture video when someone approaches your home or presses the built-in doorbell button. This camera also offers a 180-degree field of view, although it displays images in landscape, so you may miss Apple's built-in packet detection feature in HomeKit Secure Video, assuming the video doorbell is both exposed to HomeKit and works with HomeKit Secure Video to start with. As for connectivity, there's no mention of whether it uses Wi-Fi, but since it's also a video doorbell, it should use Wi-Fi due to the bandwidth required for video. The non-HomeKit version of this lock also uses Wi-Fi, which makes perfect sense. The lock isn't for sale and the website only says 'Coming Soon', but if you're looking for a device that does two jobs in one, this might be the product for you.
