Troubles with vendors joining HomeKit Secure Routers could signal rocky road ahead for Apple's support

Cupertino, March 25, 2024

When Apple announced the HomeKit Secure Routers feature in 2019, it generated a lot of excitement. The concept was to integrate HomeKit with network routers and mesh systems to enhance security and privacy. The goal was to simplify router configuration, especially when using HomeKit accessories, all managed through the Home app. However, support for routers was slow to roll out and never reached budget models provided by ISPs. Now, it appears that this feature may never materialize.

Apple has a history of discontinuing features and services (like Ping), and it seems like HomeKit Secure Routers might be next on the list. This feature, distinct from HomeKit Secure Video, requires Apple's approval for companies to add support. But according to a new report, Apple is not currently accepting new routers into the program, with no indication of when this policy might change. This means that the HomeKit Secure Routers currently available could be the last ones to be released.

Two router vendors have reportedly attempted to join the HomeKit Secure Router program but were informed that Apple is no longer accepting new additions. The implications for existing users remain unclear. While Apple has not officially confirmed the program's status, the limited number of compatible routers listed on its website raises concerns.

It is unclear why Apple is abandoning the HomeKit Secure Routers feature, but it may reflect concerns about relinquishing control of router management to the Home app. Router companies have focused on developing user-friendly apps for configuring complex mesh WiFi systems. As vendors prioritize AI features, their own apps play a crucial role.

If Apple decides to discontinue the HomeKit Secure Router vision, it is better to move on rather than leaving it unresolved. While launching its own router is a possibility, the absence of any recent AirPort-related announcements suggests it may not be a priority for Apple.
