Two Years On, Ikea’s Diregera Smart Home Hub Now Supports Matter

Cupertino, October 2, 2024

In May 2022, Ikea proudly announced its Diregera hub, set to bring Matter support to its smart home lineup. Now, two years later and a bit behind schedule, that upgrade is finally available.

Better late than never, as Matter support now allows control of any compatible Ikea smart home product via Apple's Home app…

Matter is Essentially HomeKit Compatibility

The Matter standard was developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance to ensure that any smart home device can operate within any ecosystem.

Supported by Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung, Matter-compatible devices will function regardless of the smart home system you use.

For Apple users, a Matter-compatible device is equivalent to a HomeKit-compatible one in terms of functionality.

Ikea’s Diregera Smart Home Hub

Ikea continues to expand its range of smart home products, including light bulbs and blinds, at affordable prices. While HomeKit compatibility was promised, it took a long time to materialize in the Trådfri hub, causing Apple users to remain cautious.

The Diregera hub was introduced with the promise of rectifying this delay by offering Matter support.

The Verge reports that this upgrade is now available.

Ikea’s Dirigera hub can now be updated to act as a bridge between Ikea’s smart home devices and Matter-enabled systems. The software update expands upon earlier beta support, allowing Ikea’s entire lineup of Zigbee-based smart home devices — such as lights, blinds, controllers, air purifiers, and sensors — to communicate with Matter-enabled devices from any company.

As noted in the article, the implementation is still somewhat limited because a hub is required, whereas one of Matter's core benefits is direct device support. However, it remains a significant step forward.
