Updating Apple HomeKit accessories using the Home app

Cupertino, March 15, 2024

With the increase in security concerns in the smart home industry, it is more crucial than ever to ensure that your HomeKit accessories are regularly updated. Apple's Home app simplifies this process by allowing users to easily update their compatible accessories with just a few taps. We will guide you through the steps on how to keep your accessories up to date.

To update your accessories, you will need a compatible HomeKit accessory. While a comprehensive list of compatible accessories is not available, vendors like Eve Systems, Belkin's Wemo, and Logitech have enabled updates through the Home app. You will also need to update your iPhone or Mac software if you prefer to use a computer, and be in close proximity to your accessory.

The Home app provides multiple methods to update your Apple HomeKit accessories. In many instances, a notification banner will appear at the top of the Home app alerting you to an available update. By tapping on this banner, you will see a list of accessories with updates waiting. Simply tap on "Update" or "Update All" to begin the update process. If the update banner does not appear, you can manually check for updates through the Home settings or the settings menu of your accessory.

To manually check for updates in Home Settings, tap on the "More..." button at the top right of the screen, then select Home Settings. Next, tap on Software Update and choose "Update All" or "Update" next to your accessory. To check for updates through your accessory's settings screen, navigate to the room where the device is located, tap on its icon to access the control screen, then tap on the Settings icon followed by "Update All" or "Update".

Keeping your smart home accessories up to date with the Home app is a simple process that ensures you benefit from the latest bug fixes, security patches, and potential new features.
