Before you can start updating your devices, you need to make some preparations. First and foremost, you'll need a compatible Apple brand device, an iPhone, iPad, or a Mac computer. Everything works, but whatever you're using must have the latest update and be within wireless range of the smart devices you want to connect to it. This may be easier with an iPhone or iPad, because you can walk around with it. Next, you need to check the devices to make sure they are compatible with the Apple Home app. Any device built for Apple's HomeKit framework should be compatible out of the box, but if you're using third-party devices you'll want to check through the Apple Home app first. If the app can detect them, you're good to go. The vast majority of smart home devices from most major manufacturers should be compatible, although there are some rare exceptions. On Apple's website you will find a fairly extensive list of smart home accessories that support the Apple Home app.
