Wiz Launches Home Monitoring: Apple HomeKit Users Still Left in the Dark

Cupertino, September 28, 2024

Smart light manufacturer WiZ has unveiled a new Home Monitoring system that leverages your existing smart lights to safeguard your home from intruders and other unwanted guests.

If you're an Amazon Alexa or Google Home user, this could be an intriguing solution for maintaining the security of your property.

However, if you are an Apple user, the news isn't as favorable.

All About the Lights

At the heart of this new feature is the WiZ indoor camera, which uses 'SpaceSense motion detection technology' to detect movement and then generate lighting scenes based on the activities within your home. These lighting scenes could serve as deterrents to alert potential intruders, such as flashing lights, or create the illusion that someone is home when you're away.

This entire system will be managed via the WiZ home app, eliminating the need for additional software downloads. It is compatible with all existing WiZ lights, so there's no need for any upgrades. The only hardware you'll need to purchase is the WiZ indoor camera. Through the app, you can set up what WiZ refers to as 'routines' to ensure your home remains secure.

As mentioned earlier, this feature integrates seamlessly with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, making it a perfect fit for users of these platforms. Unfortunately, Apple HomeKit users will not be able to enjoy the benefits, as there is no current support for HomeKit or Apple's Home app.

After reaching out to WiZ, we learned that the limitation is due to Matter, the new industry-standard for smart home devices, which currently doesn't support cameras. WiZ hopes to add support for Matter once cameras are included in the standard.

Until then, the WiZ indoor camera will be available from the second half of May and will be priced at $69 / £79 / €89.
